From post 7 about pillow cases-- About 20 years ago a friend of mine made the kids pillow cases out of Christmas fabric and we still use them!
DH loves to make things, but never has enough time, so I got everything he needs to make an owl box for our field. Man, did I need help at the hardware store!
@greenbutton – he will be so surprised! The best kind of gift.
H is getting a sous vide setup - the “cooker”/circulator, a food saver, and a cookbook. There will be a few other things: a shirt, book or two, smart wool socks.
1D wants a purse, some clothes for her new job, and a cast iron skillet
2D has only mentioned a purse so far.
Dh is getting a new travel bag and a pair of his favorite pants (he left his last pair in NYC on a business trip)
DS #1- he asked for some clothes. He’s also getting some gift cards
DS #2- he wants some outdoor gear
My MIL is getting an instant pot
My brothers will be getting some food gifts (home canned jams and pickles, vanilla and toffee)
My nieces will be getting some gift cards. My niece has two small kids and they will be getting age appropriate toys.
We are cutting back this year…although it may not seem we did. I am a very frugal shopper!
Ds and their Hs will get about 10 gifts each. Each couple will get their AAA memberships renewed and tickets to professional hockey game. Both Ds will get work clothes and workout clothes, jewelry and kitchen/home decor items. Son-in-law 1 will get clothes, grilling tools/spices, air compressor and golf items. Son-in-law 2 will get clothes, golf items, tech items and truck maintenance gift basket. H and I don’t usually get anything big but H is getting my original wedding band/engagement ring reset for me. I thought that was sweet since he upgraded me to another ring about 20 years ago and I am still happy with that.
WOW NM! 10 each.
I am so glad that right from the beginning each receives 3 and stockings (which I would love to stop).
We did so because the kids received so many gift from the relatives–so “Santa” gave 3.
We do continue this and some are $$ and some $.
Each received new pj’s but after S married we also stopped unless you are actually here Christmas Eve. Now that has been a relief. Figuring out what PJ’s DIL would like was way too much work.
I know oregon…we really need to cut back more. I also do stockings for each of them. With two type 1 diabetics this year I have cut out all candies and sweets from the stockings. The girls get makeup, nail polish, hair ties, loofahs, gift cards and golf balls. The guys also get golf balls, lottery tickets, beef jerky, chapstick and gift cards. My goal for next year is one work outfit for each, something fun and stockings. We shall see if I can do it as I love to shop.
I think stockings are a pain too, plus I really hate to waste money on what is often clutter. So, the stockings for kids and DILs will have an orange and candy cane (always), their favorite candy, and lottery tickets. We are not usually lottery people, and they are always well received and fun.
S’s gf finally got me her list and I’m ordering today. Then I need to find something for my mom and I’m done.
Requested gifts include an air compressor, long underwear, ankle boots, scarves, a coat, bookbag, socks, bicycle shop gift certificate, and Shakeology products.
@NorthMinnesota , we gift heavily like you do. It’s a tradition I grew up with -even though we didn’t have lots of $$, my mom loved the Christmas tradition (new to her when she married my dad overseas) and while they didn’t spend a lot it was a time we got a majority of our “stuff” for the year - clothes, games, toys, etc.
Our total $$ amount is not “take your breath away” but there are some nice gifts. Some needed, some wanted, some just for fun. We do stockings too. The “kids” at age 28, 24 and 19 love it so much and are so grateful, if I can, I will continue it.
@abasket “our kids love it so much and are so grateful” – the best reason of all.
“I think stockings are a pain too, plus I really hate to waste money on what is often clutter.”
That is why I stopped doing stockings several years ago. I’d rather put them $ into other gifts than candy they don’t need/want or small doodads just to fill up a stocking.
We are another family that gifts pretty generously at Christmas. Always have for Christmas and birthdays, which fall roughly 6 months apart. Most of it is useful items and we don’t really buy them stuff during the year away from Christmas and birthdays.
I’m puzzling what to get for ds’s girlfriend. She doesn’t wear jewelry or makeup. I would have given her A Suitable Boy which she asked about because I was reading it, but grr she’s already gotten it. My son of course doesn’t have any ideas. I may end up going the scarf route. You can always use more scarves right? She doesn’t wear them as accessories though.
Do you see her using scarves? Or does she just use them for warmth with a coat on the coldest days?
Scarf people seem to REALLY love scarves. Non-scarf people don’t.
How old is she? If she doesn’t wear scarves, I probably would not get her one. What does she like to do
This book makes a nice gift for a young adult:

Someone recently gave me this book as a gift and I love it! Weird and wonderful! Beautiful!

My husband does the stockings. He loves to do them…and he knows what everyone likes. We get some kind of nuts, some kind of candy, some fruit, a book…and I add an ornament.
This year, everyone is getting socks too.
Honestly, my family would be happy doing stockings only…
My S’s fiancé is like that. Does not wear make up or jewelry, is not a girly girl. I’ve never seen her in a scarf.
I’ve bought her candles which I know she likes. Last year I gave her a nice pair of slippers, everyone can use slippers, right? Thankfully they bought a house this year.
Re: stockings. We still do them, but my solution was to get smaller ones for everyone. They are pretty tight and are often filled with stuff I’d have to buy eventually anyway (like dance tights, hairpins and hairnets for my dancers). I like to fill my own with new kitchen tools etc. It’s really hard to fill my son’s stocking without spending a fortune. He can only use so many razors and gloves. Ideas??
@mathmom I’d suggest getting her some other books that you’ve liked based on what you know about her reading preferences.
" He can only use so many razors." Which certainly aren’t cheaper either, @redpoodles !
