What good schools don't consider GPA as strongly as others?

<p>I understand GPA is a very very important part of an application anywhere, BUT what very selective schools (up to a ~30% acceptance rate) don’t consider GPA as much as the average college or look at extracurriculars/essays more than average. I’ve heard schools like UChicago and Brown are like this, any others?</p>

<p>Not sure about Brown, but UofC doesn’t always pick the top GPA students. But pretty high enough, not low at all.</p>

<p>Many of the most selective colleges do not report GPA distributions in their Common Data Set files. Chicago does not publish a CDS at all. Brown does, but the GPA distributions (section C11) are not reported. So, it’s hard to answer this question. Even if you knew the distributions, it might not help you too much because you would not have a complete picture of factors affecting the outliers. Low 25th percentile numbers may mean a college accepts many applicants from competitive private schools or IB programs with low average GPAs but high average scores.</p>

<p>Yeah I was curious of other schools that don’t always choose the highest GPAs because I myself have a 32 ACT (awaiting more results) and very strong extracurriculars with a 3.8W/3.3UW. <p>Columbia is another one but it pick very high SAT scorer(near 2400) from our school naviance.</p>

<p>Texas public universities do not consider GPA at all. They consider class rank instead.</p>

<p>^ Actually they are very picky. You have to finish in the top 8% of your class to go to UT. Colleges are able to figure out rank from the school profile supplied.</p>

<p>In my opinion, restricing admission to only those who are in top 8% of their class is pretty messed up. At my school, there are kids in the top 8% who score <17 on their ACT while I’m sure at more competitive schools there are kids who have scired twice that and haven’t scraped the top 8%.</p>

<p>^No, you are automatically admitted if you are in the top 8%. You can still apply and get jn if you are outside of it.</p>

<p>Rob1995, when you run the UT school system you can recommend some changes. :slight_smile: The 8% rule was instituted because too many students from outside the top schools in TX were not able to get in to the state flagship. Now being from East Overshoe is not a black mark against a student.</p>
