I was curious what grades a student needs to maintain the second semester of their senior year to not lose an admissions offer at a top university.

Specifically relating to myself, I was accepted into UCLA yesterday. I attended a private high school for three years in Ohio known for its academic rigor, where I had an unweighted 3.6 GPA after three years. I moved to Arizona for my senior year, where I currently attend a public high school. I take four classes this year (AP Econ (1st semester)/AP Gov (2nd semester), AP Stats, English IV, and AP Chemistry II) and did great 1st semester, earning a 4.5 GPA. Soon before 2nd semester began, however, I started a company and it has been consuming much of my time, and as a result, my grades have slipped a bit. I am confident I will be able to get an A in AP Gov and English IV and a B in AP Stats, but it is AP Chemistry that I am worried about. I currently have a low C and am terrified that it will drop to a D as the material continues to get harder and I do not have enough time to keep up with it. Obviously, I will try to do anything in my power to keep it up, but was just curious if one D second semester senior year could cause UCLA to rescind their offer. If I do get a D, and get the grades I think I will in my other classes, that is a 3.5 GPA still.

Any advice or information related to this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You need to maintain a 3.0 average, and must contact the admissions office if you fail to earn a C or better in any class or receive two or more Cs. I think the smart thing to do would be to contact admissions and tell them that you are having trouble in AP Chem and are worried that you may receive a D. Letting them know earlier (and honestly!) makes them more likely to understand your concern and let it slide, in my opinion.

I think a D could be cause for rescinding you, unless you have a really good reason for that D (such as a medical reason, death of close family member, etc) - I’m not sure if starting a business is sufficient reason, but as Tiger said, you should definitely call and check directly with the admissions office.

Hi Ohazz1994~
It is unclear in your post as to whether this AP Chemistry is one that is fulfilling your A-G requirement. IF it is…a D your senior year will mean you have not fulfilled your A-G requirements. CaliforniaColleges.edu;
It is also unclear as to the major you plan to pursue, as this could also be a factor in rescission.
I do know of students who have had their offer rescinded from a UC and Cal States, because of grades dropping. I would take the time necessary to change your low C to a minimum of a high C…

Last year it looked like a friend’s daughter was going to get a D in Cal BC. She was going to Cal, not UCLA, so it might be different, but Cal told her absolutely if she got a D she would be rescinded. However, she was also admitted to UCI, and they told her it would be OK to get a D. In the end she got a tutor and was able to raise the grade to a C and she is at Cal.
