What happened to the chemistry major?

I’m an incoming freshman who is thinking about studying chemistry. Today, I got this huge course selection book in the mail which lists all the majors and minors. It appears as if the chemistry major has disappeared and was replaced by some bullshit called “chemical science”. I went on the LSA website to see if this was just a mistake, but I guess it’s not. Anyone know if you can still get a BS Chemistry from Umich?

@Missalyssaxox That may be outdated. https://www.lsa.umich.edu/students/academicsrequirements/majorsminors

also on here, if you search “chemistry” it only comes up with biochemistry http://admissions.umich.edu/academics-majors/majors-degrees

I don’t believe UMich would up and get rid of chem majors for no reason…

From a page on the UM Chemistry Department website (https://lsa.umich.edu/chem/undergraduate/advising):

“The B.S.Chemistry degree offers a deep, rigorous experience that will prep
are you for the top graduate programs or a career in chemical industry and related fields.”

“The B.S. Major in Chemical Science degree exposes students to all sub-disciplines in Chemistry, but provides more flexibility in course selection than the BS Chemistry degree. Undergraduate research is an option, but not a requirement for this degree. The BS Major in Chemical Science is directed towards students who have interdisciplinary interests and are not planning to either attend a traditional graduate program in chemistry or to find immediate employment in the chemical industry. Instead, this degree is geared towards students who plan to attend graduate school in an interdisciplinary field where chemical knowledge will be beneficial, and towards students that are interested in chemistry but plan to pursue post-graduate degrees in the Health Sciences.”

The UM Chemistry Department also offers majors in Biochemistry; Biomolecular Science; and, Interdisciplinary Chemical Sciences.

In other words, it looks like the Chemical Sciences major is similar to what would be a BA chemistry major (as opposed to an ACS BS chemistry major) at other schools.
