My parents refuse to give their social security number when I was filling out my TAP application. I need to fill out my parents information so I check the boxes that my parents don’t have a social security number but they do have a social security number and are U.S citizens. What happens if I don’t provide their social security number. would I get into trouble? would I still get money for college? by the way, I’m 19 years old and I’m consider an adult. I not sure why I need my parents information.
No TAP award?See http://www.hesc.ny.gov/pay-for-college/financial-aid/types-of-financial-aid/grants/tap-faqs.html
How would they know if you qualify for TAP if you don’t provide the SSNs? If you submit FAFSA, you’re going to have the same problem.
We’re NYS residents. NYS will give qualifying students grants, but they don’t process incomplete applications. An app without soc sec #'s is an incomplete application so it won’t be processed. However, lying on an app is different. If you lie and say they don’t have soc sec #'s, I’d be concerned that you would become ineligible for the program.
Tell them no financial aid if you don’t supply required information.
You are NOT considered an adult for federal financial aid purposes until you are age 24, have a child, marry, or serve in the military.Apparently it is 22 for state purposes.
It is assumed that under normal situations, parents contribute at least something for their children’s education, and financial aid is based on the parent’s income and assets. NYS grants are for state residents only. Your parents’ SS numbers provide proof that they (and therefore you, as their dependent for financial aid purposes) are actually state residents.
If you want their money, then you must abide by their rules. Your parents are the bad guys here, not the issuers of the grants.
Perhaps one of your parents would speak with and listen to the financial aid person at your school? They can assure your parent that the number is kept confidentially and not used for any purpose other than establishing qualification for aid.
If not, you will have to work until you are age 22/24 and then start school as an independent student. That way you could save money to help pay tuition, as well as qualify for aid.
When I fill out my fasfa, I didn’t need my parents information but when I apply to TAP, they ask for my parents information. My parents refuse to give their ssn and said I didn’t need to apply to TAP if I already completed my fasfa. I apply to TAP anyway since I need more money to pay for college. Is there any way I can withdraw or delete my TAP application if I already submitted. I submit my TAP application yesterday because the deadline was June 30th

Are you applying for 2014-2015 or 2015-2016?
Yes I know the deadline was yesterday but I want to know how to withdraw my TAP application. I look everywhere online to withdraw or delete my application but I got nothing. I want to get rid of it because since I haven’t provide my parents ssn, it’s make no sense to even bother with the application. I think im not getting a financial aid because I lied that my parents don’t have ssn
Are you saying that you filed the fafsa without your parents SSN? You are not going to get any federal aid until very thing is verified with the its
Yeah i know now but I want know how to withdraw or get rid of the TAP application because since I haven’t provide my parents ssn, it’s make no sense to even bother with the application.
It makes little sense to give up free money by not proving the SSNs, but your parents have their reasons and maybe they can just pay that amount for you instead.
Doesn’t the FAFSA ID get matched with name, birthdate and social security number?
Your parent tax number is on their tax return. The schools will require you to link to the IRS data retrieval tool…and they will, therefore, have your parents’ SSNs. Of course, I think to link, they have to provide at least part of their SSN.
As noted above…without all the required information, you won’t get any aid…at all.
If you lied and said your parents had no SSN, you need to fix that.
Why did you not need your parents’ information for the FASFA?
Sorry for replying back late. On my FAsfa, it said that I’m an adult so I don’t need my parents information but however before I graduated high school last year, I completed my 2014-2015 fasfa and it did required my parents information. I was like 18 that time. My parents did gave their ssn. The problem is that the minimum wage job I had for 2 years since I was in high school couldn’t help pay for college so I never went to college last year . Earlier this year, I found a better job that pays me more money so I plan to go to college on the fall semester. I started a new fasfa for 2015-2016. I’m not sure if they took my parents information from my old fasfa.
Where does it say on the FAFSA that you are an adult?
Unless you meet one of these criteria, you MUST use your parent’s information:
Dependency Status Questions on the 2015–16 FAFSA
-Were you born before Jan. 1, 1992?
-As of today, are you married? (Also answer “Yes” if you are separated but not divorced.)
-At the beginning of the 2015–16 school year, will you be working on a master’s or doctorate program (such as an M.A., M.B.A., M.D., J.D., Ph.D., Ed.D., graduate certificate, etc.)?
-Are you currently serving on active duty in the U.S. armed forces for purposes other than training? (If you are a National Guard or Reserves enlistee, are you on active duty for other than state or training purposes?)
-Are you a veteran of the U.S. armed forces?*
-Do you now have—or will you have—children who will receive more than half of their support from you between July 1, 2015, and June 30, 2016?
-Do you have dependents (other than your children or spouse) who live with you and who receive more than half of their support from you, now and through June 30, 2016?
-At any time since you turned age 13, were both your parents deceased, were you in foster care, or were you a dependent or ward of the court?
-Has it been determined by a court in your state of legal residence that you are an emancipated minor or that you are in a legal guardianship?
-At any time on or after July 1, 2014, were you determined to be an unaccompanied youth who was homeless or were self-supporting and at risk of being homeless, as determined by (a) your high school or district homeless liaison, (b) the director of an emergency shelter or transitional housing program funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, or © the director of a runaway or homeless youth basic center or transitional living program?**
As we’ve told you, being older than 18 does not matter. You are not an adult for financial aid purposes; you are a dependent of your parents and must file their information.
It is very likely that you answered one of the dependency questions incorrectly. Did you answer YES to,the question about being in guardianship? This is for guardianship OTHER than with your parents.
Look at post 18. What did you answer YES to…?
As an 18 year old, rising college freshman, who resides with a parent or two, you would NOT be independent for financial, aid purposes.
