what happens if i tank my grades my first JUNIOR GPA

is it over for me to get ito at least UCLA?

even though i keep it up for 2nd semester
and senior year?

Define tank.

yes - important point. But if you have a decent explanation for why it happened (if it’s I got lazy, then… good luck) and you shoot em right back up again, then you will be alright. Although the definition of tank is imporant.

I had a 4.0 as a freshman, 3.86 as a sophomore, and then plummetted to 3.0 as a junior. I still got into a top 20 LAC (i’m also a finalist for a full tuition scholarship), i also only had a 3.3 first quarter of senior year and they looked at those grades as well. As long as your in the top 10% and show that you have potential to do well you should be fine.

I also didn’t have any sort of explanation for the slip (if there isn’t a real excuse don’t make one up)

Wow. What was that top 20-LAC? That’s awesome!

bmulez -
congrats on your acceptance, and best of luck for your scholarship.

To the OP:
I don’t do chances on the UC’s because I really don’t understand them. In general, however, you would add another likely or two to your list if you know that your application has a flaw in it. A problem like one poor set of grades won’t necessarilly keep you out (unless you fall below the minimum UC GPA for your classification and the particular UC campus), but it isn’t going to help, either.

Apply where you like, be especially careful to submit the best essays you can, and make sure you have a good foundation of schools.

for the UC minimum GPA, is it a cumulative? for weighted of unweighted.
so basically you can still make it up by doing well 2nd semester for junior year and then excelling in 1st semester senior year? am i right?

uc gpa is only sophomore + junior gpa (a to g courses) so your senior year grades wont count towards the uc gpa.

just do your thing and try the best you can. if you going to dwell over this, its only going to get worse.

scoooterflies,
you need to slog around the UC’s admissions website, find it, and READ the whole thing. I found it once, read it, and got a headache.

yayarea - do you have the link?

may i see the link? :)

and i feel stupid asking this
but whats a top 20 LAC? o_O

So how much of a drop is considered tanking your grades? If it doesn’t affect your cumulative GPA very much, does it even matter?

Here is the link to the CG page on the UCLA Site: the Freshman profile will give you a clue as what they want. Remember, however, that out of state is much more competitive than instate.

LAC=Liberal Arts College.

People please read the above. The UCs have a very set policy. You don’t write any letter explaining a tank in grades. Your sophomore and junior year grades are calculated on a very specific formula. Those grades plus your SAT are combined to a number. You must reach or exceed the number to be considered for admission.

Also remember - “considered for admission” is not the same as admitted!

how come some people tell me that we explain a tank in my grades?.

Oh my…

when i say tank i mean like unweighted 3.83 to 3.14

sound like same boat as me, Straight A’s for the next two semesters aint bringing my gpa up about a 3.4 now :(
