<p>My short one (150 words or less) on the common app is 193 words. I have cut it down as much as I could, anymore and the essay wouldn’t be as good. </p>

<p>usually those numbers are just a guideline…but some colleges will count the words if they can tell u’ve gone over. just have someone else read it and they’ll tell u how to cut it. no one ever can really edit their own essay</p>
<p>I’ve been writing and editing material for 30 years. Trust me, you can cut at least another 25 words.</p>
