Hi everyone,
I just got word that a roommate of mine has chosen to no longer come to Berkeley. Does this mean we will have an empty bed in our dorm or will it get filled by someone else? Has anyone experienced anything like this?
Thanks!
They will fill it unless you and roommates want to pay to keep it empty (if the school offers that option).
My D is in the same situation. She and three others were set to share an apartment together and one girl is not taking a room. The other three girls have been trying to get in touch with her all summer to no avail but finally she let them know she wasn’t sharing with them just a few days ago. They are now running in circles trying to find a suitable roommate because rumor has it that if they don’t find someone themselves, they will be assigned someone.
Worse than that is that there is one particular girl who very much wants the room but doesn’t seem like a good fit. She and my D would be sharing the loft area of two bedrooms and a shared bathroom. She has a snake (in a cage) for some type of disability, possibly anxiety, that is a huge issue for my D. She apparently also had some academic issues last year, ending with a low enough GPA to be put on academic probation. I told my D to nix her right from the beginning but she is soft-hearted and feels bad. I’m having anxiety over this now…D could end up being smack dab in the middle of a drama-fest.
The snake, or really any animal, would be a ‘no’ for me (not for my kids necessarily). I don’t think the school can make you room with an animal, even a support or service animal.
^Agreed. I think this girl is having a horrible time trying to find someone to room with and we all feel bad. I’d feel even worse but her GPA and some other issues have me saying “please tell her sorry, but no” and keep looking.
With the Cal housing crunch, I doubt an empty bed will stay empty for long. If you know of someone you would like to fill that spot (vs. a wildcard), contact housing and see what the options may be.
Oh, don’t worry. Cal has lounges that have been converted into quads. They’ll find someone to take your former roommates spot pretty quickly. There are also a decent number of freshmen that were denied campus housing outright for their first year, which I think is ridiculous.
@anxiousenior1 No lie - that new dorm they are building cannot be done fast enough.
