What happens if you are waitlisted?

I am asking this on behalf of a friend who is waitlisted at a school she really wants to go to. What should she to do show her continued interest in the school/help her to get off the waitlist?

Thanks so much,
Chris

Same question applies to deferral? I know that in the academic application process, one can send further information to help make the case for an acceptance. I’m wondering if this helps at all in the audition BA/BFA world? Would ongoing communication with the school help them to understand the applicant is interested in accepting an offer?

I don’t know, I did that for Emerson and Syracuse last year (extra recs, emails, calls) annnnnd it didn’t do anything. but who knows.

my dad always says “the squeaky wheel gets the oil”

Wouldn’t it depend on whether you are waitlisted/defered on academic or artistic grounds? If the former, then perhaps you can augment what was already submitted (like sending 2nd marking period grades if you had only sent 1st marking period). If the latter, then I would think there is little to be done - the audition really controls artistic decissions.

Yeah or the squeaky wheel gets shunned and replaced because it’s so annoyingly squeaky. And the oil is running out.

I would think that there would be nothing to lose (and a lot to gain!) by sending news of any new accomplishments and by sending (maybe at the same time) a note reminding the school of the student’s intense interest in attending and that it is his/her first choice (as long as that is true!) There’s a fine line, I would think, between showing real interest and being annoying. But perhaps Susan and others who know more about this might weigh in? Guys?

As the mom of a deferred student, I can also add my opinion to those who have already encouraged any waitlisted/deferred student to again express interest and list new worthy activities. I think it is essential to do so!

I guess it couldn’t hurt to do the things suggested above, but I just checked with 3 or 4 schools my D is waiting to hear from and they ALL said that at this juncture nothing matters except the audition and whatever other factors each particular school is looking for (academics, training, etc. - they all say something different). My D just finished choreographing The Wiz for her high school play, which I thought was fairly significant, especially since she also had the part of Dorothy, but was told by even some of the theatre directors themselves that it made no difference at this point. Kindof depressing and surprising, but I believe in living in reality and not wasting time and postage so…I didn’t! Just wait, wait, wait…

We’ve been sending GREAT updates through e-mails. Some schools have responded that they will update files. So, it can’t hurt.

Updates take little time and money in the scheme of things. They tell the school that you are still interested in them & can’t hurt in my opinion.

My daughter was waitlisted (which in Elon’s case means deferred I believe) last year. She did write and sent any updated info and WAS eventually accepted.
