What happens next

Our last audition day of the season was yesterday. Students who auditioned yesterday will receive a letter this week with one of the following outcomes:

a. In the pool of those being considered for the BFA degrees–Acting, MT, MT/Dance.
b. A Dance Minor offer.
c. A BA in Music offer.
d. An invitation to interview for BA in Theatre.
e. An invitation to audition for BM in Vocal Performance.
f. A release from consideration.

These are the same letters that all of our BFA performance applicants have received.

Ten days from now, on March 16, we will start choosing the class from those who are still in the pool: 45 men and 70 women out of the 380 we’ve seen. Our goal is 4W and 4M in MT or MT/D and 4W and 4M in Acting. We will have back-up choices for each of the 16.

Once we’ve chosen the class, Teri Devlin, our wonderful admissions liaison, will make phone calls to the students accepted into the BFA Acting, Musical Theatre, and MT/Dance degree programs. The following week (the week of March 21, we hope, and no later than April 1), formal letters will go out to everyone who has not already been released. Those students will receive one of the following letters:

a. An offer in the degree for which they auditioned—BFA Acting, BFA Musical Theatre, or BFA Musical Theatre with Dance Concentration.
b. A BFA Acting offer to some who auditioned originally for MT.
c. A waiting list offer.
d. A Dance Minor offer.
e. A BA in Music offer.
f. An invitation to interview for BA in Theatre.
g. An invitation to audition for BM in Vocal Performance.
h. A release from consideration.

So the absence of a phone call does not mean that you have been released. But it does mean that you are not in the first-round of BFA offers.

Our waiting list works very much like casting. Directors always have first choices; they rarely get everyone they want. So for each person we make an offer to, we will have at least one backup candidate on the waiting list. So far, every year some students have been accepted from the waiting list. But it’s unpredictable.

I hope this helps. Don’t hesitate to post questions. I’ll answer them as soon as I can. Our sincere thanks to everyone who chose to audition for us this year!

Dr. John,

Cannot thank you enough!! for the timeline and what to expect. A few more weeks of living w/my fingers crossed for d (and typing w/crossed fingers is murder!). So calls could start happening as soon as March 16?

Doctor John:

Thank you so much for posting the details of how it works at Otterbein! The uncertainty about how so many of the programs operate at this stage of the game, makes for so much anxiety and conjecture, as well. I so appreciate our knowing what comes next! It would simply be WONDERFUL if all of the programs offered a similar kind of post on what comes next.

Thank you again!

Thank-you Dr. John for taking some of the mystery out of the process. Bless you.

Thanks for the kind words; I had hoped that this post might help. To answer your question, mommafrog, Teri won’t make phone calls until March 21 at the earliest. It takes (at least) two days of meetings to review the videos and our notes and select the class, and then it takes Teri and me another day (at least) to assign talent awards.

In the meantime, everybody, please keep breathing!

Dr John,

Thank you so much for the information. It really puts me at ease, that I understand the timeline. My question: How many of the current pool of applicants still in the running are Musical Theater Men?

Thanks for the informative update.

Dear Dr. John,

Bravo. This is such an act of mercy. I am sure in a few weeks we will all be breathing a sigh of relief that this stressful process is behind us. From the moment we first visited Otterbein were treated with warmth and thoughtfulness. I am sure that you would love to teach all these young talented men and women. Good luck to all!

Again, thank you for making this process a little personal.

You’re welcome, dramamom. We do recognize the tremendous outlay of psychic energy (not to mention money) that this whole process requires. Anything to make it easier.

SDactor, you asked about our numbers. As I wrote earlier, there are 45 men and 70 women in the pool. Here’s the breakdown:

WOMEN
30 Acting
27 Musical Theatre
13 Musical Theatre w/ Dance

MEN
12 Acting
27 Musical Theatre
6 Musical Theatre w/ Dance

Hope this helps.

Dr. John,
Thank you so much for making the waiting process a little more understandable. We all know the feelings that come with the mailman everyday! You taking the time to keep everyone updated is a credit to your program!

Agreed…thanks a million for being willing to ease some tension with process information.

Looks like at least some of the calls are going out. We know of one girl who received a call.

Wow. Dr. John said not to expect a call until at least the 21st. Any updates Dr. John?

I received a phone call today that I was accepted.

Congrat to you SDactor !!!

I wish you the best! What disipline and degree?

Has anyone been able to confirm if calls just came 4 days early and all calls are complete at this point? Previous posts seemed to be very specific as to the 21st being the earliest for phone calls but it also makes sense that if the final verdicts came sooner that the calls would also come sooner…

I know of someone accepted for BFA Acting- a female. She got the call sometime this week, although I don’t know exactly when.

Again, I got my phone call yesterday that I was admitted into the BFA for Musical Theater. I know another boy who was admitted in the Musical Theater program too.

We finalized the class on Thursday and Teri started making phone calls last night. She has talked or left messages with everyone accepted at this point in the process. If you have not heard from us, then you have not been offered admission into one of the BFA degrees.

However, many students have been wait-listed for one of the BFA degrees, or offered a place in Dance, Music, or the BA in Theatre. All students who have not already received a letter from us will get a letter next week. All of them were printed and signed today and they will go out in the mail on Monday.

Please review my first post in this thread for details on what happens next.

Thanks to everyone for their interest in Otterbein, and for their patience. Best wishes to all.

Dr. John
