what happens when I submit a corrected fafsa with a corrected # of family members, 5 instead of 4.
If it’s just members of your family…probably not much will happen. We’re you hoping that an additional family member would yield more need based aid?
It should result in a lower SAI. What was your SAI with a family of 4? If you qualified for a Pell grant with a family of 4, your Pell grant will also increase if the family size goes to 5 (unless you were already at max Pell grant of $7,395.)
I realized that something was majorly off with the sai even though income decreased. I went back to check and there was an error in family members. Do I need to get some paperwork ready to submit to school for proof? Just wanted to get everything ready if they will require this.
You should have supporting documentation ready for everything on FAFSA, every year.
Is this for a returning college student? If the number of corrected family members is the same as in the previous year(s), I doubt you will have an issue.
It is for returning student. About to graduate this year. The number increased from 4 to 5, since we had a relative living with us. What proof do I need to prepare, just dont want to delay any aid
.
Correct your FAFSA and then contact the financial aid office, tell them you made a correction, and ask if they need anything.
Here are the guidelines for who counts as a family member
Okay, because it said in FAFSA website , that it successfully processed and showed estimate amounts of Fed Aid. So i still need to contact the school to have Federal and State Aid fixed on their end or will the amounts automatically get corrected at the financial aid office once the corrected FAFSA is received?
.
It may or may not change based on whether or not you qualify for Pell. You might also receive a higher proportion of subsidized loans. Again, if both of those weren’t already maxed out.
These things should be updated on the school’s end, but I would still contact them.
Just to be clear, if you don’t qualify for Pell or subsidized loans, and the school doesn’t meet full need, you might not receive additional FA even tho your SAI is lower.
I would be ready to offer supporting documentation for the additional family member that you are now supporting.
I did qualify for over $1000 Pell, but I will be ready to offer supporting documentation for the additional family member that we supported in 2025
That’s not the correct timing. From the guidelines I posted above, your family must be providing more than half this person’s support between 7/1/26 and 6/30/27.
Is that the case? If you aren’t currently supporting this family member, I would not update your FAFSA based on what happened in 2025. That would be incorrect.
- other dependents, only if they live with the individual now and the individual will provide more than half of their support between July 1, 2026, and June 30, 2027 (for the 2026–27 FAFSA form), or July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026 (for the 2025–26 FAFSA form)
I didn’t realize they need to live with us for 26-27. I think I made the correction for no reason. What happens now?? Do I need to file another correction or call the Financial Aid office at the school to disregard it?
You should correct it (again) to reflect the accurate number of family members who will be living with your family this school year.
Thanks for all of the info , glad I figured it out.
