What happens when I use my scholarship?

I’m taking a course and I’m using my scholarship to pay the course. If I decide to drop the course will my scholarship be affected? Can I still use my scholarship in the future?

Summer*

Depends on the scholarship. Many are per term, so if you use a term, it’s gone. Some pay back the scholarship and you can re-use those funds. Some are the worst of both world, in that you lose the scholarship funds AND you have to pay the school for the dropped course.

Thank you! What do you mean paying the course for the dropped course? Like the amount the course?

Some schools require payment on the day the course starts, and does not give a refund if you drop the course. Some give a partial refund if you drop within a certain time. Summer courses are usually condensed so the time to drop might be within a day, or the first day of class. If you don’t drop by then, you owe for the class but your FA might not cover any of that.

You really need to be careful in the summer and watch the drop date to get a full refund. If you don’t, you’ll owe the school for the course, fees, or both.

What type of scholarship is it? If it’s a NYS or federal grant, there are rules for their use (number of available semesters, etc). A grant from the school or outside grant may work differently.
