What happens when . . .

. . .a summer program starts before school ends? I’ve seen some that begin in late May or early June. If it begins before finals, and some teachers remake their finals every year and finish writing it up only a day or two before the students take it. . . what would I have to do? It’d be a complete nuisance if they had to make up a big test weeks early just for one person to take it. Has anyone had a problem like this before?

Contact your teachers and the program and find out what they are willing to do to accomodate the conflict.

Um, that’s it? What if they can’t, or refuse to? (it probably won’t happen, but I’d be worried that they’ll hate me)

I’ve been checking into exactly how this scenario is handled at my son’s school because it might occur for him next year. His guidance counselor told me that official school policy is to not allow students to take exams early, but that some teachers are willing to make exceptions and ignore the policy. Otherwise, my son will receive either an “I” or an “F” on his report card at the end of the year, but then will be allowed to take the exam at the beginning of the next year and have the grade on his transcript changed accordingly. His advice was to take the gamble and go ahead and sign up for the program, since even if the worse case scenario does occur it will be reparable.
