What have your experiences been with LSAT prep courses?

There is so much confusion out there about the quality of test prep courses. It would be a great idea to post opinions concerning test taker’s best and worst experiences. In New York, I have watched friends flounder after taking both Kaplan and Princeton review courses, having to find better alternatives after spending a lot of money and time. Usually, these have been people who initially scored around 160, give or take, on a diagnostic, and had a difficult time rising above it with those particular prep courses.
Are there any recommendations for outstanding lsat prep courses? Which are ones to avoid, in your opinion?
