Garden store is a great idea if you know one they like!!! That gives them the opportunity to get an extra plant or upgrade to a bigger size of a plant they want! Gardening cash is PRECIOUS!!!
What area of San Diego are they in? You could give them a gift card to one of the breweries in town if they are into craft beer.
Any specific suggestions? He would love it - I don’t think she drinks much, but I can see her going with it.
Another thought - has anyone tried/used Virgin Experiences? It looks like you can give a gift card to an experience (like kayaking, hot air balloon ride) but really, the recipient can choose to do whatever they want…
If only he is into craft beer, I would not go that direction. Never heard of Virgin Experiences.
A restaurant gift card would be great but need to know generally where they live.
Depending on where they live, a gift card to Walter Anderson Nursery would be an excellent idea. They give excellent advice on plants. https://www.walterandersen.com/ They have locations in San Diego and Poway. Products – Tagged "GIFT CARDS" – Walter Andersen Nursery
Or perhaps a family membership to the Japanese Friendship Garden. Membership — Japanese Friendship Garden
I’ve read mixed reviews about Virgin Experiences, as I was considering it for my S and DIL. ultimately I opted to get them other items instead. They like to find their own deals and she gets a lot of corp discounts.
I agree with @Marilyn that a restaurant gift card would be good if you know what area they live in.
Walter Anderson Nursery is very nice. You could also do a Home Depot gift card as they have a very large outdoor section. Our favorite brewery is a small one in Point Loma called Eppig right on the water.
I will note that I get annoyed when we get a couples gift that only husband has any interest in - like a coffee table book of the history of the Yankees, for example (this has happened). Or red wine when the giver knows I only drink white (this has also happened). I’m not a beer drinker so would only hope that any gift carded brewery also served cocktails (Eppig does not).
Perhaps a gift card to the Brigantine group: https://store.brigantine.com/ or the Cohn Restaurants: Gift Cards - Cohn Restaurants Lots of choices for both.
Since she likes olives, I’d fill the bowl with olive themed stuff, e.g., some really nice EVOO, jarred olives, tapenade, flavored olive oil (rosemary) or maybe a balsamic vinegar to go with the EVOO. Do you have one of those olive oil stores in your area? They probably would have more selections.
I def want that gift for myself!
As Emily Litella…“nevermind”.
@Marilyn @showmom858 - thanks for your suggestions. The Walter Anderson nursery is the one I was thinking of (another friend recommended them) - my only problem is that they only do physical gift cards! Can send it to their house, but won’t have anything to hand to them in person when I see them later this week. Argh. Might just pick up something small here and include a note that the real gift will be waiting for them at home…
I think it would be fine to write a nice card and let them know what the gift is and that is will be sent to their home.
Do you have any idea what part of San Diego they live in?
Pick up a small gardening tool and attach it to the note! Or 2 pairs of gardening gloves.
Great idea. A gardener will appreciate this handy tool (my favorite):

Ooh - good idea. I’ll head out to Home Depot or Lowes and find something today. @BunsenBurner - I’d love to get that tool, but it won’t arrive before we head out for the holiday!
I think Mira Mesa?
I think I got mine at one of the hardware stores! Good luck shopping! Gardening gloves are always welcome. Especially rose care gloves - they can be used for all sorts of gardening activities (I like mine because they protect the arms from scratches as well).
Then they’re not that far from the Poway branch of Walter Anderson. But pretty far from all the “cool hip” restaurants.
Mira Mesa is close to UCSD and La Jolla.
