What iconic movies should our High school & college kids be sure to see?

Raiders of the Lost Arc.
ET
the godfather
Goodfellas
Sophies choice
Big Chill
The Sting
Casablanca
Gone with the wind
It’s a wonderful life

Finding Nemo

This is Spinal Tap
Dr. Strangelove
2001: A Space Odyssey

Parent trap is also cute. Shaggy dog and Oliver were also memorable.

It’s fun for our kids to see today’s stars in their earlier films when they were closer to the age our kids are now:

A River Runs Through it (Brad Pitt)
Thelma and Louise (Brad Pitt)
The aforementioned Raising Arizona (Nicholas Cage), Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) Risky Business (Tom Cruise)

Spinal Tap! How could I forget the movie that introduced me to the concept of, " It goes to eleven." ?

To Kill a Mockingbird, maybe Inherit the Wind- and Onward said Lilies of the Field- ! I adored that one, as a kid, made mine watch it when they were quite young. They loved it. Some of us are thinking of far less contemporary films.

Haha, I’ve seen Gun Crazy- DH and I could get lots of Noir on FIOS or Netflix.

I love the suggestions!! I wish Netflix had more of them. I’ve been reading this thread and typing them into Netflix’s search, but most aren’t there. I did run into a few as suggestions that I didn’t see mentioned here yet.

Ghostbusters
Footloose
Grease
Pretty in Pink
All About Eve

Netflix doesn’t have these, but I’d add Young Frankenstein and The Jerk…(and the man with Two Brains…and just about anything Mel Brooks or Steve Martin lol)

I love the older movies…old black and white movies especially, but D hasn’t been a fan of those, yet. We may have to try a few on this list though!

Bridge on the River Kwai
Super 8
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Twilight Zone
Spanky and Our Gang
Wizard of Oz
The Great Escape
Every movie with Bill Murray
Gandhi
Lawrence of Arabia

Someone please compile the list…great topic thanks!

Although they are not movies I found DVD sets of Gilligans Island and Dark Shadows and resurrected those shows for my kids in their early teens. They loved them. We got the whole school hooked on Gilligans Island.

Mean Girls <3

No, but in all seriousness, “Vertigo” was, I thought, really good.

Although, I’m only a HS student,so I don’t have much experience with iconic movies.

shoboemom, I had already suggested Pretty in Pink but I completely forgot about Grease! Love that movie.

Also, All About Eve is such a classic, powerful film, one of my favorites.

iglooo - I think you’re thinking of Night of the Iguana which is a Tennessee Williams play and was made into a film with Richard Burton and Ava Gardner. It’s great.

What’s up Doc? - Madelaine Kahn’s first film and a clear inspiration to Mike Myers.

And there is a Star Trek spoof with Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman whose name I can’t remember. My girls wanted to see everything with Alan Rickman after that first Harry Potter movie came out (so add Die Hard to the list).

Also, the old Pink Panther movies. Especially the ones that have both Peter Sellers and Herbert Lom.

Shoboemom, I find all those on Netflix- streaming.
The Start Trek spoof is Galaxy Quest.

Lots of good suggestions. I’m amazed at how well many of John Hughes’s movies have held up, perhaps because he did such a good job of capturing what it feels like to be an adolescent. The particulars of dress and speech may change, but the sense of being misunderstood and forced into a role that doesn’t always fit is universal. My kids are big fans of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and the Breakfast Club.

I’ll add to the list- Repo Man (plate of shrimp, anyone?) and the Rocky Horror Picture Show, with a live cast in a movie theater.

Also, the Deer Slayer

My D’s have watched The Shawshank Redemption and Raising Arizona and Blazing Saddles many, many times. #1D will take some of our more obscure choices and have movie nights with friends. Hitchcock is a big favorite

The Stunt Man with Peter O’Toole
Local Hero
Gregory’s Girl
Airplane
Police Story
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

green witch, That’s it! Thank you.

lookingforward, you are right…I meant to say those that I listed I did find (as suggestions) on Netflix, but the next one I mentioned, Young Frankenstein, wasn’t on Netlix. Should have said THIS isn’t on netflix, not THESE… ;-)

Galaxyquest! (#73) My sons love that film. If your a sci-fi fan, and not afraid of an R rating, I highly reccommend Paul. It has so many references in it to other films. Went to see it with my sons and we were the ONLY ones laughing in the theate when the big mountain from Close Encounters popped up. You can guess why.

My kid grew up watching Disney. They’ve seen every animated film, plus some of the great live action classics like Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson, etc. On a trip to Walt Disney World, after riding the Great Movie Ride, S2 said he wanted to see ALL the films in that attraction, so we’ve been working through them. Last one we saw before he went off this fall was Good Morning Vietnam. Hope to pick up a few more during Christmas. You can find that list online. It covers every genre and is a good place to start.

Thanks to girlfriends into old films, they’ve seen stuff like All About Eve, Roman Holiday, etc. and, having grown up in the 80s, we introduced them to stuff like Indiana Jones, Star Wars, E.T., Back to the Future, Ferris Bueller, Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles and Weird Science (which they were shocked to see featured a weasley frat boy played by Robert Downey).

My oldest has turned into quite a movie buff. I was shocked recently when he was home and I was going through our DVDs and pulled out The Quiet Man starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. “That’s a great movie,” he said.
