About 10 years ago I introduced my HS son to some good movies from the 80s–Officer & a Gentleman, I forget what else but at the time they seemed important to be aware of and he didn’t seem to be enjoying the new movies that were being made at the time. Fast forward to now–he is quite a film buff and has seen WAY more movies than I have!

3 idiots! (its an AMAZING Bollywood movie)

Don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this one, but The American President is D1’s all-time favorite movie.

The Deer Hunter.
Don’t know how I missed that one.

Schindler’s List is also excellent.

Our D has seen WAY more movies than us. Because she majored in cinema, she has to watch up to 37 movies a WEEK, which is likely more than we see in several years between H & I! S probably watches way more sports than movies, but he will watch a few movies with us as a family.

One of my favorite movie lines:

“The new phone book’s here! The new phone book’s here!..I’m somebody now! Millions of people look at this book everyday! This is the kind of spontaneous publicity – your name in print – that makes people. I’m in print! Things are going to start happening to me now.”

(From “The Jerk”)

For an intro to Wall Street & corporate finance:

Trading Places
Working Girl
Wall Street (w Michael Douglas)

The films of Michael Powell, Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford, Douglas Sirk, Billy Wilder, and Stanley Kubrick. And after that watch the best of Vincent Minnelli, Orson Wells,Martin Scorcese, and Francis Ford Coppola.

nj2011mom, We reference “The Jerk” all the time! “…and this chair, and this remote control, and that’s all I need.” “It’s not the money, It’s all the stuuff!” “He hates cans!”…so many great lines. Just love that critically panned movie!

Groundhog’s Day?

The suggestion of “Working Girl” reminded me of “Pretty Woman”.

Into the Wild

High Noon; Apocalypse Now; It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World; Hoosiers

Because of this thread, my dd, her so, my h and I, just finished watching Cape Fear with Gregory Peck- excellent. We plan to watch Rear Window or All the King’s Men (1949 version) tonight. We will be a little more well rounded after tonight…

I don’t know if they’re iconic, but I offer an enthusiastic second to all of these:

Local Hero
Galaxy Quest
Paul
Trading Places

For teen angst I adore the Breakfast Club, but here is one I haven’t seen on the list:
Heathers (Winona Ryder and Christian Slater)

Good Will Hunting has always been one of my favorites. 50/50 is another great (and often underrated) one.

The Godfather (parts I and II)
Casablanca
Philadelphia Story
Gone With the Wind
Das Boot
Goodbye Mr. Chips
Stand By Me
Nosferatu
The original Star Wars trilogy
Indiana Jones I and III
Shall We Dance
The Sound of Music
The Searchers
High Noon
Trading Places (my commodities broker husband loves this movie above all others)

Addendum: Farewell My Concubine (for older kids) and Andrei Rublev (slow but very visually beautiful–too slow for most teenagers).

Dead Poets Society

The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
