What if I cannot obtain a transcript?

I recently applied as an undergrad to a university and as required, listed all colleges/universities I previously attended. I figured I should list a university I studied at last summer (studied abroad through a government program), as it might make my application look better.

Although I studied at the university through a government program for language studies, I was technically not registered as a student with the university itself. I now realize I may have given false pretenses which is not what I intended. The last thing I want is for a university to think I’m lying about my background.

I called the university I am currently applying to and explained my situation very clearly several times, but was repeatedly told I must obtain a transcript, otherwise my application will remain on hold [forever?]. She told me there are many international students and students who have studied abroad who are able to obtain a transcript, no matter the circumstances. I have contacted the university I studied abroad in and am having my mother call (as I do not speak the language well enough to explain my situation to possibly obtain a transcript), so I am hoping I am able to get one. But if I cannot, does anyone have advice as to what steps I should take? I asked if I could have the listing removed but was flatly told, “NO.” I did not realize transcripts MUST be obtained from all previously attended colleges/universities (never transferred before, this is my fault for not realizing); had I known, I would have left the foreign university off the list.

Any advice? Thank you very much.

If you can’t get a transcript, do you have or could you get verification from the government program stating what class(es) you took and possibly a grade?

Yes, it is possible, but they asked to do it by e-mail, which I highly doubt any university in the U.S. would accept as proof. My mother spoke with a woman in at the university in Taiwan and as she asked me to do, I e-mailed her and she forwarded the e-mail to the people in charge of the whole international students ordeal, as she’s not sure if the university is able to mail out hard copies of my “transcript.”

I do have a “Certificate of Study”; one being an actual certificate showing I completed the semester from May 5, 2008 to June 15, 2008 (listed 5/2008 - 7/2008 on the application, as I actually stayed in the dorms until the end of June). The other shows the courses I took and my grades. Both are laminated on standard 8.5 x 11 papers, with a notary seal on the grades sheet and a signature by the minister on the certificate itself.

I am going to call UNC-CH in the morning and ask if they can accept this, if a copy is made at their office (I do not wish to give this up, as it is for my records as well). If so, I will go in and try to resolve the matter in the admissions office or wherever I would be required to go.

If this doesn’t work out, I guess I’ll have to hold out on a response from the university in Taiwan and hope for the best…
