What if I have a schedule conflict for the B/K interview?

Hey, I am a semifinalist for the Banneker/Key scholarship, and I’m supposed to go to UMCP on 3/12 for the whole day. The problem is I’m captain of our tennis team, and tryouts will be going on for the first 2-3 weeks of March, and I really don’t want to miss them. I can actually attend on 3/12 if my interview ends before 2:15 so I can get back to school by 3:00. Is there a way for me to call up the scholarship committee and arrange this ahead of time?

Does anyone know the other dates for doing interviews? If they are all within a couple days then it doesn’t affect me, but if one of the dates is near the end of March I can go because I will be on Spring Break. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

i think if you tell your coach that you have an interview for a full ride scholarship, she’ll let you miss one day of tryouts

and seeing as you are the captain, i doubt that your chances of making the team are in jeopardy

The interviews seem to be between March 7th and March 14th-- those are the earliest and latest days I’ve seen so far. You can contact them about alternate arrangements. We know folks who had to change dates due to other activities, so it’s not unheard of.

However, they do have a full afternoon of activities planned, so I would make every effort to be there for the entire afternoon session. It’s the least you can do if they’re going to give you at least $8K/yr. Your tennis coach should understand.

Or, if you really can’t make it, I’ll take your place

Do you guys think it would be reasonable for me to email someone (what email address?) and ask to have an early interview? Or would that be pushing my luck?

I personally think you should skip one day of the 2-3 weeks of tryouts for this interview.

I conferred w/ my Terp D, and we both agree with lindz and others here. If you’re not interested in UMD, then decline the interview day altogether and give someone else a chance. If you do want to go to UMD, you should skip the one day of tennis try-outs. It’s a matter of priorities; you need to decide what yours are.

Yea I just sent my postcard confirming my attendance on my assigned date. I’ll just have to skip school (yay!) and tennis tryouts. Thanks for all your advice.
