I’m a 1st year at UVA and I am running a solid 3.5 GPA and I expect to do much better this semester. I plan on working at the local hospital for the next few years and possibly get EMT training.

I am really interested in becoming a doctor but I just don’t care about all of the hype. Pre-meds have got to be some of the most stressed out and cutthroat kids I’ve ever seen.

Is there such a thing as a laid-back pre-med? I party every weekend but I still end up studying a large portion of the week. If I get like a 3.7, decent MCAT, basic EC’s, recs, etc., I can still get into Med School right?

P.S. I am just posting this thread because there was such hype over GPA, SAT’s, etc. in high school but I realized that most of that was complete bs.

At the same time, aiming for the minimum is a recipe for failure. The goal is to be excellent without being cutthroat and stressed out, not to be mediocre in order to avoid the cutthroatness.

I was a laid back pre-med - laid back med student too. Like you, I worked hard during the week and went out Thurs - Sat nights. As long as you get your work done, there’s no rule saying you have to be stressed out about it.

I feel the exact same way as you do. I wanna be a doctor and will put the work into it, but just now I don’t feel like it. It makes it worse when you see lots of people doing tons and tons of work for classes and you put in little. I guess there are some laid back ones, but you just have to find them.

You may be able to party hardy in your undergrad years but I’m very sure you won’t have the luxury to get your booze on in med school. Just be chill and do your thing. And don’t befriend pre-meds because they’ll never be your real friend.
