I am receiving $25k in scholarships + grants for the first year at UC Merced. But I’m wondering if I don’t like college the first year I attend, can I transfer to a community college? Will I have to pay back the grants I got the first year I attended UC Merced?
As long as you complete your semester and don’t drop out without notice you will be okay on your grants. Be sure to read your student handbook so you understand your drop dates and withdraw dates. Also read about satisfactory academic progress so that you understand where you have to be to continue to qualify for aid.
If you transfer after a year to a cc, you will only have another year before you will need to transfer to another 4 year to begin taking your upper division courses in a major. It might be difficult to finish your degree in 4 years if you do that. So focus on one year at a time okay but you can do it.

With that kind of aid, you really do need to try to like that school. There really is little to dislike about UCM. It’s new and small and although it’s obviously a UC, it is a rare one that is the size of a private. The individual attention would be so much better than at other UCs where people complain about being “a number.”
