What if we threw out all the illegal immigrants?

Do you know what percentage of the federal prison population is illegals?

Specifying federal prison would overstate the percentage, since immigration violations and international drug smuggling are federal. State prisons house a much larger number of prisoners, where the illegal immigrant percentage is much lower than for federal prison.

In 2000-2005, the percentage of non-US-citizens (including both legal and illegal immigrants) was:

Federal prisons: 27% (2000), 20% (2005)

State prisons: 4.6%

All prisons: 6.8% (2000), 6.4% (2005)

US population: 6.9% (2003)

13 percent of California’s total inmate population of 162,821 are illegals.
