What if you can't bring a purse?

Yes, especially since they are “discouraging unless necessary,” not banning small handbags.

I will say that there have been events for which it wasn’t clear to me what was permitted and what was not. For example, what constitutes a “long lens” for a camera?

I think I said upthread I’ve never been to a college graduation.

But for me Philly is a big city, we’re planning to take a taxi from our hotel to the venue so we need money. Obviously my husband will have some cash on him, but I think I will need a phone to connect with others who may be there including the graduate otherwise how will we find anyone (husband doesn’t have a phone)? I assume I need an I.D. and credit cards, I certainly don’t want to leave them in my hotel room. If I put all my “stuff” in my husband’s wallet and he gets pickpocketed then where will we be? Or if we get separated and I have nothing on me at all? It could also be a situation where we go from the graduation ceremony to dinner, or to a party or back to d’s dorm. So I just don’t think leaving all my credit cards and whatnot in the hotel room makes sense.

When I want to travel light I copy what my teens wear under their skirts-wear “spandex” (volleyball players). In my case a light weight “body-shaper” I can tuck my phone and lipstick inside the waistline easily (towards the side) and I usually wear something loose over, like a jacket, sweater etc. This works well under pants and skirts, but might be a little more difficult to access easily under a dress!

Actually I really like that idea. pcnwmom. thanks!

I would bring a light jacket with secure pockets. Having a cell phone to find folks in large crowds is very helpful. When I am without my purse, H has been willing to carry things, but if I want to carry my own things, I do wear something with SECURE pockets and or a light jacket or vest with secure pockets.

I am not comfortable stuffing my bra, tho I have seen it done and even phones retrieved from bras in public. I also tend not to wear an invisible money belt or similar except when traveling to high pickpocket or crime areas (like Rome, Italy).

I like the spandex shorts option. We tennis players carry balls in our spandex undershorts all the time :-)

Actually, I have quite a few dresses with pockets, and a small wallet that fits in them. I seldom carry a purse.

Personally, am not a fan of Spandex and similar fabrics. So nice there are options!

Two UW students won their school business competition with this idea:

[Don’t Know Where To Put Your iPhone? There’s A Bra For That - Forbes](Don't Know Where To Put Your iPhone? There's A Bra For That)

Not likely to be on the market any time soon, because they got sued by someone claiming to already have a patent on the tech.

If I were faced with this situation, I would buy a lightweight, summery-fabric blazer jacket that coordinated with my dress. Then I would sew several pockets inside the jacket. You could have snaps or velcro closures. If you don’t sew, I think you could find someone to do this for you. With this approach, you could customize the pockets for what you want to bring. I would put the camera in one pocket and phone and other items in another pocket. I have small, lightweight mesh bags with zippers. I would put small items in one of those: lip gloss, ID, money, credit card, Kleenex.

Personally, don’t think it’s a great idea having a cell phone that close to an area of the body that seems more prone to cancer than much of the rest of the body. Just more to think about.

The mental image of this has kept me laughing to myself all day- thanks!

The phone in the spandex shorts and stuffed bra does not sound comfortable at all, especially on a hot humid day. I have seen one woman at the gym work out and place her iphone in her bra and she was all sweaty - blechh!

I use my Vera Bradley wristlet, which is small but has an outside pocket for my iPhone. I can’t imagine anyone banning things of that size…

no purse no water? this is just stupidhow about clear zip lock bags? what about tampons? if this was my kids school i would be beyond irked. what about meds? or people with diabeties and need to carrry emergency insulin or juice

i can guarantee an emergency and the no purse thing is just stupid

if this was me, i would have a clear zip look bag with everything i wanted to bring, throwing in a few embarrasing items as well, maybe a condom and some alka seltzer

how paranoid we have become, sad indeed, and why no water? afraid the grownups might sneak in some wine or vodka to get thru the hours of tedium? you can take more on a plane

One does wonder about medical supplies. Epi-Pen, asthma inhalers, diabetic supplies and other crucial items need to be kept on hand and cool. Water or other fluids can also be a major health need, especially for hot, humid day. Few, this makes me curious about our kids’ U, even tho we aren’t attending any ceremonies this year. Last year, you could bring pretty much anything–sad how quickly things have changed.

Our kids’ campus is still not having restrictions on apparel or bags or beverages. H and I purchased food and beverages, which we are while waiting for the ceremony to begin. It was a long wait.

If there’s no room left in your bra, you could put one behind each ear.

Now you are getting carried away. We’ve already established that small and medium handbags are NOT banned (especially for those with a need) only “discouraged.” Only oversized bags which I define as the size of a tote or backpack, are banned. As Hunt pointed out, it’s ridiculous, and defeats the purpose to stick things in your hair or your waistband since you’re going to have to put them through an airport type scanner, or have them searched, anyway. If she has no secure pockets, OP should just bring a small bag and call it a day.

I am sure there will be water available.

The Scott E Vest Classic Vest has a pocket and a strap to hold a small water bottle.
