What if you register for a class but not it's lab or recitation?

Like for Chem or EGR 53L. What would happen to you?

I don’t think you can. I think what you do is register for the lab or whatever and you’re automatically enrolled in the class.

yeah you can’t register for a class w/out lab or recitation because that’s the way you register for the course (by picking which lab/recitation time you want)

Well, the exception to that is for the classes that actually have a separate class listed “L9,” like I think Chem does – where you register for the lecture/recitation but the lab is separate. If you don’t register for the lab, I think you’re just screwed because the lab is 30% of your grade. But…I’ve never known anyone who didn’t register for the lab, so I don’t know for sure.

If you sign up for the lecture without signing up for the lab and/or recitation, and the lab and/or recitation is required for the class, then the professor or a dean will likely contact you after a bit and tell you to sign up. I couldn’t accurately guess what they’d do if you refused or failed to sign up for the lab or recitation - probably they’d flunk you or kick you out of the class.
