I don’t get it. Why does everyone hate it so much?

Who’s Who markets itself as being exclusive, but is in reality mass-mailed. Basically your name goes in a book no one reads, and you have the opportunity to buy the book for $$$. What is bothersome about it is that (along with some other groups) it makes one think one is receiving a prestigious honor.

basically, it
s like a scam. if you put it on your apps, it doesn
t do anything to boost your profile.

basically anyone can get it…i know someone with a 3.2gpa and 1050 SAT who got the letter.

It’s basically a dictionary, except for they have names of high schoolers instead of words.

i think ur all showing a rather negative view of Who’s who. there is another side to it as well, one that shows that the only reason it is what it’s become is because it’s been misused

who’s who isn’t spam mail. you have to be nominated by someone, and ur nomination goes through a committee (they do reject people every once in a while)

it has the potential to be a good idea, but it’s heavily misused. lots of people that are doing the nominating nominate solely because they want to do the nominee a favor. so, a lot of ppl that don’t deserve to be nominated get nominated anyway because the nominator things it’ll help the kid get into college

the committees don’t do anything to weed out these people. in the end, the list is crowded with completely unqualified people, something that gets in the way of Who’s who ever being used as something prestigious.

so, what im trying to say is that Who’s who isn’t necessarily an evil place that is trying to get money out of u (even tho they are), it’s simply a good idea that was administered poorly.

You don’t have to be nominated. I suppose there might actually be some way of nominating someone, but I have no idea how anyone would go about it. Maybe they have something at a website somewhere. Mailing lists are big business in the US. The other scam is National Honor Roll which is run by a marketing house that sells the people on the “honor roll” to mass mailers. At any rate, putting Who’s Who or National Honor Roll probably won’t really hurt your app very much, but the adcoms will sigh or roll their eyes as they skip over the “awards”.
