What is a good pre-med/med program?

Hi, so I’m a high school senior from Belgium and i’m going to med school in the fall (different system in belgium, no pre-med and all).
After 3 years i’m getting a bachelor degree in medicine and i’m planning to go to an american university after that instead of doing a master in medicine.

The thing is, I have absolutely no idea what good schools are, except, you know, ivy leagues.
I was kind of thinking of applying to UCI (great weather, and i’m not a genius so an ivy league is out of the question)

I would really appreciate it if you would give an opinion about uci and other possible schools.

I think the big question is what are you trying to actually accomplish for a career and what coming the US does for you.

Without an MBBS or it’s equivalent, you can’t start a residency program. If you’re hoping to go to a US medical school to earn an MD, then there are going to be issues with you having the appropriate pre-requisite courses, so you’re essentially going to have take probably a year or two to complete a post-bac program, take the MCAT, and then apply to medical schools. That path seems to me like you’re wasting your time in Belgium.

I guess what it all comes down to is what your career goals are.

Yeah, i know i’m wasting my time here, but i haven’t taken any tests yet (toefl, sat, …) and i don’t want to sit around doing nothing for a year or two, and it’s stupid not to take on the third year too, so i earn a degree.

I want to come to the US cause you get a lot more options there, and it’s an experience i don’t want to miss out on. I want to go into surgery and belgium has too many doctors at the moment, so my chances are pretty slim, and i really don’t want to be forced to become a GP.

Don’t really mind taking on an extra year or two, it could be a good preparation.
