What is a good SAT score for an ESL student?

What is a good SAT score for an ESL student who have been in the US for only 3 years? (about 2 years when the student takes the SAT)
Will the college even give a look for this kind of students???

Have you taken the TOEFL yet?

A good score on the new SAT is probably about 1850.

A score good enough to get into Harvard, Stanford, or Caltech is probably is about 2100 unless you got a good hook.

i think a 1850 is manageable for ESL students, considering a 750-800M
and then maybe a 550+CR and 550+Writing

What schools are you looking at? I have reason to believe that Harvard will not excuse a 500 CR section when so many internationals do, in fact, manage a 700+ on the CR sections. If you’re looking at top-tier universities, sometimes a high math score will compensate for a low verbal score, if you’re a math-sciency person and looking to go in that field.

I think a good cumulative SAT score for an international is 2000+. If you’re looking at the Ivy’s and the top LAC’s, aim even higher, like a 2100 or even a 2200.

I do realize that you’re at a disadvantage when taking the SAT’s and I don’t mean to come off as snarky in my post but I think with a lot of studying and practice, these scores are very attainable, even for an ESL student. The Writing section is very coachable and within a week of practice, I managed to improve my score by 70 points on practice tests! The Critical Reading section is difficult for an ESL student, so I think if you score above a 600 on the Critical Reading section and do relatively well, like 700’s on the other sections, that would qualify as a good score.

I don’t think ESL excuses u from anything. I’m in ESL and I got a 770 CR. If you study and practice u will do fine, although that practice will be longer than time Americans usually do.

I haven’t taken TOFEL recently but I have taken it few years ago. I got about 230 out of 300 on it.

I took a practice SAT CR & Writing at my education center and got around 550 for both of them.(I have now been in the US for a year) I am kind of confident with my math and I think I can probably gain a good score on that part. Is it possible to rise my score to 750 or above in a year? Essay and grammar are not serious problems for me, but I don’t have a solid vocabulary and also read very slowly. Anyway I hope I can do better than 650 after this summer (looks a little bit impossible but…I am working very hard for it!!)

I will be a junior after this summer and I feel really bad now. I moved here when I was in 10th grade and it was really a shock for me. My parents got immigrant lottery and told me weeks before we immigrant to the US. I don’t have any EC yet and I haven’t taken any AP class. I have only one SAT II score right now and it’s only 760 for Math IIC. (seems like everyone gets 800 on this…><) According to my counselor at the education center, I am way behind thousands of students in the US right now. I doubt if I can still have a chance to go to a good college. Can you guys give me some advices of what should I do right now or for the following two years? (11th and 12th grades) Really appreciate for it!!!
