A summer program wants a photo of the kids head shots? What kind of photo will it be. Thanks.

Pictures of the kids surrounded by lettuce…

KIDDING!

They’re just shots from the shoulders or neck up - kind of like yearbook pictures for non-seniors.

Asian parent, so not sure what headshot really means. Thanks :)

What kind of summer program is this? Academic? Theatrical?

If NOT theatrical…it basically means something like a school photo…the kind that is from the chest or shoulders and above…basically a close up, basic shot, portrait type of picture so they know what the student looks like. I don’t know the age of your child but most kids have a school photo or a senior portrait. If you do not have one like that, you can get such basic portrait shots at places like Sears.

If this is theater related, a “Headshot” is a professional photo, often done in black and white for the purpose of auditions into a program, or casting in a show. While it has some similarities to a portrait or school picture, it should be taken by someone familar with theatrical headshots as it needs to really show who the person is. My guess is that you are not talking of a theater program and even if you are, they likely do not require a professional theatrical headshot. If you are talking theater or can be more specific, I can try to help as I have a daughter in this field who has professional headshots and am also a college counselor and ONE area I do deal with is students applying to theater programs.

But if you are talking any other kind of summer program, I am sure a school type photograph will suffice…a portrait of the student…plain background, close up. They likely just want an idea of what the student looks like up close…mostly the face. You may even be able to get a passport type photo taken very cheaply that could be used for this purpose.

One of DS’s summer programs wanted 4"x6" head shots. When I dropped him off there were posters with all the kids’ faces, names and hometowns hanging in the dorm lobby.
