what is a hook?

I was just wondering what is considered as a hook? I have tons of ec’s but I have no idea what part to talk about in the “which of these activities is the most important to u?” question that every app asks. The problem is I’m interested in so many things that I don’t know how to pick just one. Should I talk about the activity that I’ve spent the most time in? the activity that supports my major? the activity that has affected and taught me the most? the activity that shows the most leadership qualities? I feel like all of my ec’s have contributed to me as person, not just one, and I wish college apps would give me room to express all of my interests.

You do not have a hook, so don’t worry about it. There is some debate on the definition, but it’s something that will almost certainly get you into your college. It is usually something outside your control.

As to your actual question, if there is one activity that is the most meaningful to you or that you enjoy more than the others, write about it. Otherwise, write about an activity you enjoy that will fit in well with the rest of your application. I would suggest not writing on the same topic as your essay. This is a chance to communicate to the college who you are as a person, so write about an activity that shows more about you than they can tell by reading your activity list.

Is being an international student a hook, or a liability?

more of a liability

These are only three definitive hooks:

 1. URM
 2. Legacy & Connections
 3. Celeberity Status or very high recognitions

And also, the subjective hook, which may or may not count:

 1. Passion & unique involvements
