So what is it exactly? And how is it different from the private dorms?

HI. I recoommend reading the information at [College Houses Cooperatives: Student Owned and Student Run](http://www.collegehouses.org)

Cooperative dorms are owned by the students who live there. There is not a profit motive. Each house is run democratically by the resident-owners. For instance, if the majority vote to have quiet hours from 11pm-6am, then everyone is expected to follow that guideline. If the residents are tired of meatloaf, then they vote to ban meatloaf from the menu.

With freedom comes responsibility for your house. For a small work commitment, you can save thousands on your housing/food costs.

Co-op housing can be anything from a home for a few residents to a dorm for hundreds. This experience is not for everyone, but may be for you, if you are a considerate person who will be responsible and accountable to your fellow residents and are wanting to control your housing/food costs.

My S has applied. I hope he gets offered a contract.
