<p>I am a new parent of prospective 2011 plebe…I went to the Parent Forum and saw where they were talking about getting involved in the ListServe for information. What is that? Any help would be most appreciated.</p>
<p>You sign up by giving your email address and you will receive emails which give info, support, tips etc. from other parents. You can ask questions or give advice yourself based on your experiences. Most of the academies have this and it is a lifesaver.</p>
<p>Bossf51, there you go again giving great information. The listserve helps tremendously over that first summer. You can just receive the information or take part in discussions. It is especially nice because parents of other cadets/mids will sometimes give you a heads up as to an event and you are better informed as to what your kid is going through. I was a little hesitant about giving out my email but those in charge of it are very sensitive to privacy and they don’t put up with any “funny business.”</p>
<p>The best part of it was my son talked about his roommate in his letters and how well they got along. As the postings came through, I could see that my son’s roommate’s parents were active on the listserve and “us moms” became friends. We would email each other as we heard from our swabs and it was really great. When we went to parents weekend, we met and went to the football game together that weekend. Again, you can choose to be involved or not. It is kind of like this board; you can just read the information and enjoy the discussions, or you can put in your two cents worth.</p>
<p>Lastly, a lot of parents who are able to attend different events as the summer starts to close take pictures and then post the site where you can view them. I can’t tell you how I cried when I saw a picture of my swab saluting as he came aboard the Eagle for his week on the ocean. Had I not been involved in listserve, I would not have seen the pictures, and there were actually many. It was a long three to four months from R-Day until Parents Weekend, and it really got us through. We were not at about three different events and yet parents took pictures of ALL the swabs to share with the families back home. So, long story short, it is truly a lifesaver and sanitysaver (don’t know if that is a word).</p>

<p>In case there are any West Point parents reading this, USMA also has listserv. You can sign up to prospective-net anytime. This is good for questions regarding the admissions process and questions leading up to R-day. Once your candidate reports parents are moved to plebe-net. After plebe year they have one called parent-forum for all parents of upperclassmen.</p>
