What is a Pavlovian response?

it is a subconscient response of the brain. for example when you see a lemon your mouth starts to secrete saliva. This is based on the past reactions of the body when you ate lemon.

A guy named Pavlov did an experiment with a dog. He rang a bell right before he fed the dog food. When the dog saw the food he started salivating. So eventually the dog was conditioned to believe bell = food. In the end ringing the bell caused the dog to salivate. He was conditioned.

my mom (who has a degree in psych) also told me of the mcdonalds thing. when kids sit in the car and they go to mcdonalds, they see the golden arch (the M). and when they see food, they get hungry. so they learn to associate the golden arches with food and so whenever they see the golden arches, they feel hungry and ask for food. is that a pavlovian response?

Yes. Although you have to be seriously conditioned for it. As of now you would associate yellow (it’s not gold) arches with McD’s and hence food. If you only ate McD’s and saw the arch before than yes, you would say yellow arches = food.

Classical conditioning, basically.
