What is a "pre-interview"?

I asked this question in the interviews thread but since my “pre-interview” is this Saturday I would like a timely answer :)

I was just contacted today by my interviewer for a pre-interview. I’ve already had one interview for Columbia ED and that was just a regular interview. I am a bit confused about this concept of a pre-interview.

My interviewer is a Senior Resident at Massey College, University of Toronto so I’m meeting him there on Saturday. Do I still need to prepare like it is an “interview” or would it be more laid-back?

SO CONFUSED!

I appreciate any insight :)

I read on a Yale thread that a pre-interview is just an attempt to see what your interests are and try to match you up with an interviewer with similar interests.

Not sure if it applies to Harvard as well, but hopefully it gives you an idea.
