What is a realistic SAT score increase? ex: how easy is it to raise score by 100 pts?

I took the March SAT: 570 in crit. reading, 510 in math, and 640 in writing. What is a good SAT score to work up to and how realistic is it to work up to a 100 or 200 point increase? thank you!

Depends, how much have you studied prior to that score?

Of the students that I work with for SAT math preparation, the average increase is approximately 90 points in the math section from the PSAT (when they take a course). The verbal teachers I work with yield similar results in both reading and writing. So the average score increase for a student taking a course is about 270 points (Here I am taking the highest score for each subject over 2 SATs). Keep in mind that this average accounts for the fact that some students do not do their homework, and some students already have very high scores. So 270 is a bit of a low estimate for students that take their studying seriously and are below a 600 in each section. Also keep in mind that these students are taking a course with me and are therefore being guided to use their study time extremely effectively. Studying for the SAT without any guidance generally yields very minimal score increases.

This guidance does not have to come in the form of an expensive course or tutor. It can also come from using good materials, and just getting the right information on the proper way to prepare for and take the test.

General rule of thumb: one fewer mistake per multiple choice section will net you about a 100 point improvement overall. A good way to get the ball rolling as you prep is to try to identify at least one question in each section that’s a “shouldagot.”

Start getting all your shouldagots, and adding more question types to the shouldagot category as practice makes you sharper, and you’re well on your way to a nice score improvement.

^Is that short for a shouldawouldacouldagot?

“Shouldawouldacouldabutdidnagot” because of some variation of the silly mistake error type. At your current score, it is relatively easy to bump yourself up at least 100 points. The curve only gets nasty when you surpass the 2100 range and try to improve, but even then it is still completely possible.
