What is a Remainder Mark?

I’m buying some used textbooks off Amazon for next semester and I was wondering what exactly is a “remainder mark” ?

Many of the descriptions say it:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/offer-listing/0060956410/ref=sr_pb_a//103-2358653-5340608?condition=all

Umm… when someone folds the top corner to remind them where the last page read is located.

A “remainder” is a book that remains with a publisher after sales have fallen off, usually sold at a reduced price.

And therefore, what kind of mark would be left on a remainder book?

I thought those were called dog ears.
