What is a residential college?

In the brochure “Living at USC” I see the term “Residential College.” What does this mean?

There are housing options at USC. Five of these are Residential Colleges. The purpose is to integrate the social, cultural and academic experience. Some colleges in the UK offer residential colleges. Usually there is a faculty member or members living in the hall. Discussions, outings, social events and films may all be part of the living experience.
