What is a typical day like for a CMU student?

Alright so a current student or alumni could probably answer this question best, so this one is for you!

What is a typical day like for a Carnegie Mellon student? Can you talk about what one normally does on a weekday and then on a weekend day. Do most students go to the library 24/7? intramural sports? games? clubs? hang around in your dorm/on campus? explore Pittsburgh? party? What is there for students to do no campus? What does each day consist of.

Oh and if you can just talk about the “CMU Geek” stereotype and how true that is that would be great.

Thanks.

Pretty much all of those things are different for every student. I used to wake up about an hour before class, have breakfast while watching the news, go to classes, have lunch, go to afternoon class, do some homework, have dinner, hang out with friends for a bit playing games or watching tv, then do some more homework. I hated working in the library, so the only time I spent in Hunt or the Engineering library was because friends wanted to work there. I spent most of my studying time outside of my own apartment/room in my department’s computer cluster.

Now and then I’d go and do something off campus or some activity, but generally it was hanging out with friends or doing homeworks with friends for my socializing.

Of course, I had friends that were involved in 20 clubs all at the same time while doing sports, but that’s their own choice and you’ll find them anywhere.

Weekends I’d usually spend either Saturday or Sunday working and the other day doing whatever I felt like.

thanks for the quick and detailed response!

7:46 wake up, yell at roommate to get out of shower
8:30 first class
9:20 eat breakfast, take a nice break
12:30 go to recitation
1:30 more class
3:20 go to work
5:20 eat
6:20 usually spend a few hours at library looking over materials/dong homework
9:00 back to dorm, finish some more homework, maybe watch a movie

Also, your days depend on what classes you have… some have one or two classes on Friday. Also, you’ll have a ton of recitations (classes taught by PhD students—not the professor—that supplement the material in lecture. Some of them really help in hard classes, but others you will hate going to (e.g. physics I), especially when you have hw you need to do.

As for the geek stereotype—everyone has a little bit of nerd in 'em. I like to call it passion.

Generally, for freshman year, my schedule looked a little something like this:

Wake up, get ready for school. Get some pastries and milk from Entropy.
Go to classes.
Eat lunch
Go to more classes.
Come home and do homework.
Hang out with friends and join in dorm antics.
Eat dinner with buddies
Do more homework
More antics
More homework
Sleep

On weekends, friends and I would generally play a little pickup basketball or football game. Or play tennis, racquetball, pool or ping-pong. We’d watch a movie or two. Maybe go to a restaurant for dinner. Sunday’s are usually reserved for homework time.
