What is a VALID appeal reason?

So I’m curious. I see a lot of threads with people wanting to appeal, and then a LOT of people saying that they don’t have “valid” reasons. Do you absolutely HAVE to have documentation for a medical problem (for ex. pneumonia or swine flu?) or documentation of a family member’s death? I found that pretty absurd.

ALL IN ALL:
WHAT IS A VALID REASON TO APPEAL?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1314316-do-college-appeals-usually-work.html?highlight=appeal

If you were borderline and they were still very interested in you, they would have asked you for documentation. The fact that you were outright rejected means you weren’t close to the line – not close enough that an appeal would work. Basically, what you think was the reason (and the subject of your appeal) is not the reason you were rejected.

At most schools which allow appeals, typically state schools, there has to have been an error or incomplete information when they considered the application. So, error on transcript, missing scores, etc. It is not a “do-over” where the students get to emphasize what was already in the file. Nor is it the chance to show them newer grades or additional awards (unless, maybe a student was an Intel finalist or something).

This has been another brutal spring for seniors, with many broken hearts and saddened spirits. As many others have said, take a solid look at the choices before you and go from there. Good luck.
