What is after SMP?

A friend of D went to Georgetown SMP after college. The MD school will take top 10% from the program and the top 25% will have a shot at other MD/DO programs.

What about the other 75%? Is their MD/DO career over? Go to grad school afterwords and become researcher? Get into PA/NP program? I am just wondering the out look for those who “failed” in SMP. Will they be competitive for grants in grad school?

Odds are they are still a few years away from a PhD program. PhDs require strong research backgrounds which odds are these kids don’t have.

I know one person who may end up having to go this route (already whiffed on one med school cycle after a post bacc). They will try again with an MCAT retake but if the score doesn’t come up and/or they still get rejected from lower ranked med schools and DOs then yes, the career path closes and either you look at PA/NP or other health sector jobs (various technician positions) or other biomed jobs that don’t require advanced degrees (drug rep, research tech, etc)
