I would like to know just how a 9th grade student spends their day at a competitive school in nyc? Are core subjects: math, english, science, history lang. studied each day, 5 days per week? When do most kids get to school and when do most schools’ end classes? How about electives during the week…how time is allocated to them per week and how long are the classes? Lunch etc? Thank you.

My daughter is in pre-IB in NYC. She’s a sophomore now, but last year she had Living Environment, pre-IB English, the conclusion of Math A, Global Studies and Italian. Her electives were one semester of law and debate, the second of journalism. This year she has pre-IB English (which has the identical syllabus as my older daughter’s college Brit lit class), AP Euro, Chemistry, Math B, Italian and Latin as the elective. The classes are all five days per week and last 45 minutes. The school (as most in NYC) has 0-10 periods and each student will have a different start and end time because of crowding issues. Many of the classes she is takinig/has taken conform to Regents requirements. In junior/senior year she will take the IB classes and whatever AP classes she can fit around her schedule. She is allowed to take as many classes as she wants, as long as she passes.

Not a school in NY, but a competitive science and tech program in the DC area. S (HS freshman) has the following full-year classes this year: Algebra II Trig, Honors Bio, Honors English 9, Honors US History, Latin 2. First semester one-semester classes were Beginning Guitar and Web Page Design; second semester one-semester classes are Engineering Foundations I and Health. School starts around 8:15 and ends at 3:15; classes are five days a week, 45 minutes each class. There are eight regular periods a day, with one of them allocated to lunch. There is also a zero period that upperclassmen can take advantage of, but it is not available to freshmen.

i was a freshman last year in a high school in upstate ny. my scheduale was this: Latin 2, Theater as an elective all year, band/choir, math a/b, global history 9, advanced eng. 9, living environment. our classes were 42min long. we started at 7:15a.m. and ended at 2:15p.m.

Why do you ask?
