What is AP Java Programming?

My school offers a class called AP Java, with the description that it prepares for the AP Java Programming test. I looked on CB’s website, and I couldn’t find any test by that name.

I’m not familiar with AP’s computer tests… so, is there one computer sci test that focuses only on Java, and if so, which one?

Any explanation would be appreciated! Thanks!

Both Comp Sci A and AB use Java as their language. The only real difference is whether you also do in-depth study into a (i think fish?) computer sci simulation at the end of the year.

Thanks, stupak, that really helped!

Stupak is completely and totally wrong. Yes, both are about Java, but both tests do the case study. The difference is over the material. The AB test is just more in depth; it adds several new concepts. It’s like the difference between the Calaculus AB and BC exams.

Thanks for clarifying, iwastypo. And will colleges prefer the AB over A, like with AB over BC?

like with AB over BC

I hope you mean BC over AB

Oops, sorry yeah.
BC over AB.

Well, as it is a more advanced class I suppose colleges would see it as more challenging. It would probably be more likely to get you credit, too.

Like iwastypo said, you’re more likely to get credit from colleges with the AB test. Back when College Board used to classify tests as “half year” tests and “full year” test, Comp Sci A was considered a half-year test and AB was a full-year. I haven’t taken the Java version of the test, but I took AB back when it covered C++ and the difference was that the AB covered more advanced topics like OOP, pointers, linked lists etc

my mistake, heh. i’ve never taking comp sci before, and that’s what my friend told me =/

Thanks for helping anyway, stupak. And thanks to everyone who explained the comp sci tests. It was really helpful.
