What is Appalachian?

First of all, I’m way sorry if this is in the wrong place, I wasn’t quite sure where to put it. Okay, so my English teacher this year stressed how important it was to make sure we put down that we are Appalachian on all our college forms? I’m not quite sure where to put this though? Should it go under “race” on the commonapp? I didn’t think it should, so the only place I ended up putting it was under something on wash u’s supplement where it seemed to fit. Now I’m applying for the Pogue Scholarship at UNC, and they put a special emphasis on minorities, so it seems important to say that I am Appalachian. Should I put that under ethnicity, and check white and other and then explain other with Appalachian? Please help!!!

Its not a minority its just that appalachian range is known to be very poor, impoverished, and not as developed as the rest of the country. Its not a race if you want to put it down mention that you come from a crappy area.

cheers,
Mike

Yes, it is important to indicate that you are Appalachian. This is a well-recognized regional cultural minority group in the US. I don’t know if you are bi-dialectal (do you speak Appalachian English at home and Standard American English at school?), but many people in your region are. This kind of stuff is interesting to college admissions and scholarship committees because most of their “white folk” come from the suburbs. You would bring a somewhat different perspective to the classroom. If you need help with your paperwork, go back to that English teacher and ask for more specific advice.

Wishing you all the very best!

Yes - Appalachian is considered a minority and I agree with happymomof1 that you need to get some clarification from your teacher.

But I think if there is a way to check off “white” and “other” on an application, then that would work best. My concern is that if you check only “white” and leave the Appalachian part to a supplemental section that the information might be missed - especially with anything that specifically targets minorities.

“Appalachian” is most definitely NOT an ethnic category.

If you have lived in the region Appalachia (the region of the Appalachian mountain range) most or all of your life, mention that in your college application essay. Simply write about how where you grew up influenced you and made you the kind of person you are. Colleges that care about this issue will know you are in Appalachia from your address.

I agree with tokenadult. It’s something to bring up, but not in the race/ethnicity section.

I’m Appalachian as well!

I’m glad you brought this up, I wasn’t sure where I could put it either, but I think I might not include it.

There is a distinct ethnic group in Appalachia called Melungeon. While probably not on any list of common ethnic groups, there probably are scholarships out there for people in this group. It’s worth a look if you fall into this category.
