I want to apply either to Columbia U, ED or Harvard and Princeton EA. I don’t know which one I have a better chance of getting into. I have some people in my school that got into Harvard but did not get into Columbia; which is why I am confused. What do you think is the better choice; all three of these schools are my top choices, so there is no preference.

Then you probably haven’t given the selection enough thought. Remember that Columbia’s early admissions program is binding; you will attend if accepted.

All three reject more than 90% of their applicants. Princeton takes a higher percentage of applicants than H or C, but that does not mean that the particular package you bring has a better shot at P than one of the others. You know people accepted at C but rejected at H, and there are others who were accepted at C but rejected at H. C has had a particularly fast run-up in selectivity the last few years (partly because they just switched to the Common App). Both H and P are returning to EA after dropping it a few years back. So it’s a fluid situation that’s hard for much of anyone to predict.

If you have no preference, you might as well pick one from a hat. You’ll save a lot of effort and angst, and can devote the time saved to strengthening your application.

H and P will have SCEA, or Single Choice Early Action, meaning that you can only apply to one school EA. You can’t apply to both H and P EA.

ED is your best bet. Because C knows you will matriculate if accepted, they’re willing to take a chance on a borderline applicant. They can’t do the same in the RD round, especially now that their apps are up after joining the Common App. EA doesn’t provide the same boost because you’re not guaranteed to go if accepted.

Agree with #6. If OP is this misinformed about the relative differences in the three schools and is only thinking about applying given minuscule differences in accept rates in ED/EA programs, then he/she better just drop an app at the school that’s most loved.

albby: everyone’s chances are poor to terrible in applying to each of them, early or not. Just choose which you want the most and go for it. Seriously.

Alright, thank you!!! I will, I will do more research during the summer, and visit the Princeton and Harvard (since I already saw Columbia). I know it’s definetly better to go ot which school I like more; I just assumed that all three have superior education. I just don’t want this opportunity to apply ED/EA under increased chances to go to waste ( I guess it’s impossible to tell which is easier to get into)… Thanks!

I’m debating on whether I sould go on a risk an apply ED/EA to Harvard,Princeton, or Columbia … or be more safe and apply ED to cornell (where I prob stand a higher chance of being admitted)… but where I don’t want to go as much… I am intersted more in humanities, although I have more knowledge in the sciences (since I’m volunteering in a lab and taking ap bio and ap calc bc)… Thanks again to everyone!
