What is Considered a "Solid" Extracurricular or Volunteer Job?

What are some suggestions for volunteer/extracurricular work that is considered “solid”? It’s freshman year, and I don’t know what exactly an extracurricular is. Writing contests? Productions? Same with volunteer work. Also, how many of each is considered acceptable?
Thanks for any help/advice/guidance!

Whatever you enjoy doing. You can’t just do an ec for application padding find what you like and do it passionately

Please see this thread.

There was a similar thread earlier today asking the same question, but anyway…
There is no one set path of ECs that you need to complete. You do want to demonstrate a passion in something, it could be anything from science to animals to drawing to anything in between. The passion should demonstrated through one or more ECs that you show a great commitment to. Beyond that the only things you need are leadership (but you are a freshman so good leadership positions are sort of unrealistic) and community service. There is no number needed, remember quality over quantity.

As for what an extracurricular is, it is anything that you do outside of school. That being said there are some things that are technically ECs but not ones you would ever put on a resume. In the past I have seen people mention things like being tutored or playing basketball with friends, these are not strong ECs. On the other if you are tutoring others or playing basketball on a team they would be good ECs.

Contests are good, having a list of awards is always good for resumes, but you need more then awards.

Sorry this was long, but hopefully this helps!

I think the best ECs are the ones that demonstrate passion, dedication, and initiative. A huge list of ECs won’t stand out if the student’s not passionate. Quality>Quantity.

So really, go with what you love.
