What is Fin Aid based on: Original or Corrections?

I originally submitted my FAFSA in January, then submitted corrections on February 4th. I received a confirmation email on February 4th. But when I log into FAFSA it says ‘Not Submitted’ and in my Correction History there is a Not Submitted entry with no date (whereas my first two submissions have dates and PDFs). This is clearly an error and I intend to call them tomorrow.

My question is, is my FAFSA based on my original application? Will I receive an award based on my February application, even though my FAFSA is currently listed as Not Submitted? Or do they retain award packages until my application is no longer listed as Not Submitted, even though I have a Confirmation email?

I’m worried that there was an issue and I won’t receive anything!

Hi Alisa,

Welcome to CC

Are your parent(s) required to file taxes?
Have your parent(s) filed their taxes?
If yes, have you changed your status from will file to completed (filed)

Have you uploaded your information using the IRS data retrieval tool?
If your parent(s) are not required to file taxes, have you submitted your non-filers statement from the IRS?

Until these things are done, you will not get a finalized package.

Your final financial aid award will be based on the corrected (after taxes filed). As Sybbie noted, anything you receive prior to updating would be an estimated award only. And YES, that estimate can change based on your corrections. I would urge your family to get the taxes done ASAP.

Think about it. Of course your aid will be based on the corrected numbers. If that weren’t the case, everyone would put low numbers in at first, and then “correct” with the true higher numbers …but still get aid based on the original numbers. That wouldn’t make sense.

I get that my award will be based on the amount in my taxes, but my concern is that because I just now completed the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, my application is only now being formally submitted and therefore I won’t be getting much if anything in Financial Aid. Hence my question whether the priority is based on the original submission date (Feb 4th, in my case) or the date that tax information is completed (today, in my case).

So since I just now completed the IRS DRT, am I now at the back of the line, as it were, for awards? Or is priority based on my Feb 4th application, and I already have priority but the amount will be adjusted based on my tax info?

And Sybbie: I’m filing as independent.

It depends on your school’s policy. Any entitlement aid ;Pell, direct (formerly stafford loans), you will receive regardless of your filing date. However, if your school gives SEOG, which is distributed on a first come, first served until the $ runs out, you could be out of the running. IF you are eligible for FWS, you may still receive it in your package, but it will be up to you to find a job.

Keep in mind if you are talking about public schools, many of them do not have any need based aid to give outside of federal and state aid.

I’m only expecting federal aid, and I did receive a confirmation mail with an estimated aid amount (both in February and today; but they have the same confirmation code?)

The only deadline the school has on their website is February 15 as the filing date. However, I don’t know if that refers to my original application (with estimated tax info) or the updated application (with finalized tax info).

The deadline refers to your initial filing date. The date you initially filed fulfilled that deadline. However, your actual financial aid award will be based on your updated information.

are you 24 or married or a vet or have a dependent child?

What was your EFC when you first filed?

Since you’re only expecting fed aid, then your place in line won’t matter much since it doesn’t sound like you’re expecting Work Study.

If you’re a frosh and independent, then you’ll get about 9500 in loans and if your EFC is low enough, a Pell Grant.

Thumper, to clarify: I have not made myself ineligible for FAFSA by updating my tax info this late, and I’m still in line for an award because I initially filed before Feb 15; it’s only the amount of my award that might change? It’s the original date that matters, not the date of the last correction?

Mom: My EFC was 08375. I’m a 25yo independent. This is for graduate school.

Alisa,

As a grad student, you are not going to be eligible for Pell or state aid.

Are you doing a Masters or a PhD program?

If you are doing a masters program, most of your “aid” is going to be in the form of loans (some schools may give you a small amount of money, but most of the funding will be loans). As a grad student, you can borrow the entire cost of attendance through the direct loan program (all grad loans are now unsubsidized).

If you are attending a PhD program, are you getting funding (this you will be able to find out from the school)? Will you get full tuition and a stipend?

I’m doing a master’s program. When you say most ‘aid’ will be in the form of loans, are you referring to private loans or federal loans such as through FAFSA?

And reading around more, it sounds like as long as I submitted my estimated tax info along with my application before the Feb 15 deadline, it’ll be okay… they couldn’t require updated tax info before April 15th, could they?

As an independent student in a masters program, you can borrow the entire cost of attendance through the direct loan program (federal loans). You are automatically eligible to borrow $20,500. Anything over this amount would be a gradplus (direct plus) loan based on your credit worthiness.

But when I log into FAFSA it says ‘Not Submitted’ and in my Correction History there is a Not Submitted entry with no date (whereas my first two submissions have dates and PDFs). This is clearly an error and I intend to call them tomorrow.

Do you get the Not Submitted message now, after using the DRT? If so, you have to provide a PIN and submit!!!

The initial date of filing will be used for aid purposes.
