College-age D is headed to New Orleans this weekend with a friend who is from there. She mentioned something about it being Mardi Gras, but I thought that was not far a while yet.

Yep. It is Mardi Gras. (After the day mine had, she may be there , too. ;))

Oh dear. So how worried should I be?

Let me see, Mardi Gras, the Saints won the Superbowl, and it is Valentine’s day… Those are the three reasons I do not want my D and her NOLA-born bf to head down to NOLA this weekend

D is in NOLA at Tulane and having the week of her life – topped off by the fact that she turns 21 today. which actually doesn’t matter in NOLA. if your D’s friend is from NOLA she likely knows to stay out of the French Quarter. The parades swing through the Garden District which is a great place to watch from – even a little family friendly. My D insists Mardi Gras is NOLA at its best and most interesting culturally – and not its wildest – as long as you stay away from Bourbon Street.

Mardi Gras actually is a period of about 2 weeks full of fabulous parades which culminate on Fat Tuesday (next Tuesday). Some of the best parades are the weekend prior to Fat Tuesday so your D will be there at a great time!

Absolutely. Watching the parades on St. Charles is very nice and doesn’t have the wildness and lewdness that goes on towards the Quarter. Of course there are isolated exceptions, but holds pretty true. With the Saints parade this past Tuesday and Mardi Gras in full swing this weekend through Tuesday, I am so jealous my D is there (freshman Tulane) and I am not (Tulane alum).

Weather outlook is actually decent too. When I was there the mid-February Mardi Gras were both cold and wet, while the two early March ones were fabulous. They are predicting highs of 52, 59(!), 45 and 51 with good sunshine each day for Sat, Sun, Mon, and Tues. Should be a blast.

I’ve got one headed to Mardi Gras this weekend also. It’s his third year going and I have no illusions that he will avoid Bourbon St. He is very responsible and my least impulsive one, but I still gave home the whole “be smart and stay safe” lecture. I could almost hear his eyes rolling through the phone.
