What is it known for?

I’m applying as a transfer student this year and am currently working on the application essays. In the why do you want to transfer essays, I’m trying to develop reasons unique to each school. For example, knowing that Dartmouth is known for its community feel and focus on undergraduates, I incorporated that into my Why Dartmouth essay. I have other specific reasons for each school, but I’m looking for a general feeling. I know Duke is known for being well-rounded, but does anyone have any thoughts that might help me out. Thanks, I’d really appreciate it.

Well… From what I hear, Duke is known for students who are independent enough to come up with their own essay topics.

b238,

One of the other mom’s posted this on another thread. In my opinion, it provides a great overview of what Duke is looking for.

Hey I was just kidding. I think they are looking for students who have passion and a uniqueness that pulls them out from the rest of hte bunch. good luck in your college search!

Coach K, K’ville, Blue…and basketball.

Here’s the thing - if you are applying to transfer from somewhere to somewhere, I would think that it means you have been to a place, lived there for awhile, and determined that there are some things about it that are so not in keeping with what you want your college experience to be - or that it lacks some things that are so necessary for what you want in your college experience - that you are going to go elsewhere. So you’d better do some pretty good research to figure out in yourself what those things are and then match them to schools.

I feel like a better way to pose this might be to tell the group that you are looking for (x number) of things about a school, and find out if Duke has them. Good luck in the search!

Thanks a lot guys, I appreciate all the posts. I actually just finished my Why Duke essay, would anyone be willing to give it a read over?

especially any current Duke students?

I’ll read it, but it might be a couple of days before I can get it back to you.
