What is it known for?

I know washu is a great school and attracts brilliant students around the world… but what is it really known for??

Well, they have great programs in a lot of areas, which is why there is such great diversity at Wash U.

<a href=“The Record - The Source - Washington University in St. Louis”>The Record - The Source - Washington University in St. Louis;
On this website, you’ll see that 19 disciples at Wash U were ranked within the top 10 in the nation.

They do a LOT of research, if you’re interested

oh, and historically they were the sight of the 1904 World Fair i beleive? some fair then. they also have top-notch teachers

Last year their Relay for Life event (a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society) was the number one collegiate Relay in the nation-I’m excited for this year’s event!!!

Also, they have an excellent art museum- http://kemperartmuseum.wustl.edu/

Really, the collection is amazing (Picasso, Rauschenberg, Calder, M.C. Escher, Max Ernst,…to name a few). They also bring in temporary exhibits that change each semester. Currently the entire ground floor is housing an exhibit on art concerning Post-Wall Germany. I really suggest you visit the art museum if you stop by campus! I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

WashU is really good for double-majoring too. They offer an incredible about of flexibility with classes. No matter what school you’re in (Arts & Sci, Engineering, Arch, etc.), you can take classes in any other school you choose to. I think that’s pretty cool.

In the past, WashU was most known for its amazing Medical School (ranked #4 in US). In the past decade or two however, it has transcended beyond medicine into an overall “elite” university. One of the things that people constantly say about WashU is that there is something special about the school’s friendly, mid-western atmosphere that makes everyone love being there.

Does anybody have a list of the top universities for biochem?

are languages any good @ washu? i’d like to study one or two, but maybe not major in them… which is why i’d go for liberal arts (cuz i have noooooooooo idea what i want to do).

They are known for mysteriously rejecting top applicants who go on to fabulous academic careers at better universities.

(sorry, couldn’t resist)

Polisci number one?? I’m really quite surprised at this…usually Michigan, Stanford and Chicago are tip-top for this study.

And I wonder what the 3 schools above them in psyc and soc. sciences are. Anyone have a copy of the whole list? You have to pay to get it on their website.

http://www.academicanalytics.com/CHEArticle1-07.pdf

Here’s the article.

I think this list is bull.s.hit. How is Chicago number TEN in economics?? How is UMich not even IN the top 10 for art history? Harvard is known for its enviro studies program – not even in the top 10. And how can UMD and Stony Brook beat Chicago in social sciences?? That just doesn’t make sense…

I think it’s great that WashU is getting some attention, but this list sure isn’t worht anything.

yeah, lists are only good if you agree with them.

Okay, fair enough. There was a lot of personal bias in my mini-rant above. I hate college rankings, with the sole exception of the Times Higher Education Supplement, simply because it is what it says it is - a measure of prestige. Peer review is 40% of its score, and they think that’s a good thing. There is nothing wrong with ranking based on peer review (“reputation”), but for whatever reason a lot of people complain about it. I’m not saying that there aren’t great schools that are largely unknown, but if you take these rankings for what they are, then some sets seem more logical than others.

Few people doubt that Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford, MIT and Yale deserve to be the top 5 universities in the world, and that’s what the THES publishes.

I tend to put schools in large clumps because I belive the usefullness beyond that is questionable.

@ReninDetroit

Isn’t that list for graduate school?

It’s for “overall excellence” or something like that.

Outstanding professors who get to know their students.

ReninDetroit, the lists are NOT meant to rank department quality. They rank how much faculty have published; nothing more and nothing less. UCSD ranked at #9 for oceanography reveals the dubious usefulness of the lists.

WUStL is a bit of a jack of all trades but master of none. Northwestern, Georgetown, and Emory are like that too. WUStL does excel in the medical sciences. Anthropology/archaeology, German, ecology, and business are also strong.

WUStL has a FOCUS program modeled after Duke’s, although it’s a bit different.
