What is it with Michelle Bachmann's eyes? (not political)

I live in her district, and the picture that was selected is pretty much how she looks all the time. That wide-eyed stare IS her standard look, and has been as far back as I can remember. I have been at events where she was a few times, and it really is what she looks like.

Also… D1 had an internship in DC last semester, and the internship coordinators arranged for them to meet with one of the reps or senators from our state. She was taken to visit with Michele Bachmann. Who had one (large) false eyelash sort of hanging down (only half attached). A photo was taken, as it usually is when someone visits a rep in their office. Should offer now to the media for big bucks…

You are right, missypie - even during the campaign she would usually find local talent by way of recommendation. I know because she used the guy who cuts my hair a few times when she was in my state - he went to her, of course. I also saw her up close at one of the rallies - it takes more makeup than people realize to look “natural” on TV or in photos!

Completely disagree. Christie’s weight challenges are part of his charm. I think you’re really underestimating the American voter. Actually, one of the things I don’t like about Romney is his conventional good looks. One of the things I liked about Clinton was his weight problem.

Back to Bachmann’s eyes – others have them. Have you thought about Paul Newman or the Bond actor right now. Her eyes are, I believe, blue and somewhat piercing. In an actor it would be seen as an asset.

Newsweek is embarrassing itself of late with its partisanship and juvenile tactics.

And fwiw, I really don’t think it’s possible to discuss politicians in any manner here without it being “political”, particularly as the country gears up for what looks to be quite a ferocious election season.

Mike Huckabee would disagree with you about the weight, sewhappy. I was at a mtg with him a few years before he made his run for president, and he was much heavier. There was no reason to be meeting with my particular group, except laying the groundwork for a later presidential run (like Rick Perry’s book last year). He knew shucking some of the Huck would make him a more attractive candidate.

Is that a medical term for an electronic device to keep Bill-far-of-her-place?

I don’t live in her district but I agree with intparent. I just don’t see what all the fuss is about on the Newsweek photo. To me it doesn’t look much better or worse than all her other pictures. I presume it’s pretty much what she looks like.

As for what she looks like, I have close to zero agreement with her politics, but think she looks great. How many 55 year old women, especially ones who have given birth to five (Five!) kids, look that good?

Funny about Perry’s hair. Just the AM I saw a picture of him in the paper. My first reaction was that I could not trust someone with such groomed hair. He just looked too slick. Granted I know nothing about his politics.

Agree with what coureur said. I don’t get why everyone is making a big deal about the Newsweek cover.

As I said earlier, it’s not just the cover pic; it’s the pic in conjunction with the “Queen of Rage” headline, even though the story says nothing about rage. As I also said earlier, the picture isn’t flattering, but I don’t think they doctored it or anything. Her eyes really do look like that front on. IF they wanted to be kind, they COULD have used a photo like this: [Google Images](http://www.google.com/imgres?q=michele+bachmann&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7DKUS&biw=1024&bih=566&tbm=isch&tbnid=Z3EwWeoxqJ0UhM:&imgrefurl=http://www.prunejuicemedia.com/2011/michele-bachmann-puts-her-presidential-delusions-on-god/&docid=PVaAEdq7Qx4l4M&w=550&h=498&ei=G79FTv6nHuiQsAKH5L3gBQ&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=879&page=1&tbnh=125&tbnw=136&start=0&ndsp=17&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:0&tx=93&ty=84) It’s a 3/4 shot that is softly lit.

Could it be that joking about something as trivial as her looks represents idle chatting that should NOT devolve in the partisan bickering that is prohibited here?

The same could not be said about the highly questionable title used by whoever still collects a paycheck at that rag that masquerades as a relevant magazine in the hope of delaying its certain demise by appealing to the same army of morons who get their daily fix from the HuffPo.

If there is anything “wrong” or unusual about Bachmann’s eyes, it’s that she often doesn’t quite appear to be focusing right on the camera. She sorta looks like she’s staring at something that is located just a few feet beyond or behind the camera. But as I said, she still looks great.

I understand that we have to confine ourselves to trivial things about politicians because we can’t play nice when talking about things of substance. But the discussion here on CC is not what surprises me. It’s the national discussion. All three networks ran stories about the Newsweek photo and the outrage it has stirred up. I just don’t get it. I think the photo looks fine and is pretty much what she always looks like.

Coureur, since it is a PHOTO, we can safely assume she does look like the picture. However, as the outtakes available at the owner of Newsweek shows (Daily Beast) show, the editors deliberately selected a picture to “illustrate” their title with a vivid image.

The only thing that was missing would have been a small insert with a picture of Jane Badler and a story about the famous V series.

http://www.denofgeek.com/siteimage/scale/300/2000/29184.jpg

:)

So, does is there a medical reason that one can diagnose when this doesn’t happen, or is it always assumed it’s a bad blepharoplasty?

Both of my parents had blepharoplasties. I assume at some point I will need one, and I really, really don’t want my eyes to end up looking like that.

Not that DB is worthy of a link, but here are the pictures they did not use:

[Michele Bachmann Newsweek Cover Shoot Outtakes: Photos - The Daily Beast](http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/galleries/2011/08/08/michelle-bachmann-newsweek-cover-photos.html)

I have heard that some people view Chris Christie’s looks as part of his everyman, shirttails out persona. But what is indisputable is that, charming or not, his weight level is very, very unhealthy.

Well, a good plastic surgeon should have a deep and applicable understanding of human anatomy and how to manipulate it for improved appearance. Unfortunately, we often see the results of either overzealous doctors or overzealous patients who think more/higher/ bigger/ smaller is better than “normal”.

I took a closer look at the Newsweek photo and it is more wrong than just the upper lid rising above the edge of the iris. The lower lid closes over the bottom edge of the iris. This usually happens when someone laughs or grins (which she is doing) but normally the upper lid would close over the top of the iris, as well. So I did an experiment and you can try it. Turn the mag picture upside down and try to cover those lashes with a finger or something. If you imagine that you are looking at her eyes upside right, they look almost normal. Try it and see what you think. Maybe newsweek did some creative cutting and pasting? Who knows.

Xiggi, I’ve looked at those outtakes and her eyes are startling in almost all of them (and in one, she appears to be fixing a stray eyelash!). Also, her pupils look small enough to add to the startle factor. Smaller pupils happen in brighter light, and also when we’re afraid. Subliminally, larger more open pupils are more appealing to others. If your eyes are as light as hers are, the small pupil problem is more noticeable even in the distant shots of her face.

I think she looks fine, too. Everyone has, well…flaws, for lack of a better word. I am just interested in figuring out the reasons for things, especially when it comes to perception. Her eyes are unusual and it isn’t the color. Something is off there.

None of that means she isn’t an attractive woman. Personally I think perfection is boring.

Yep, PG - her son Tripp, Trapp, Trog, Trig or whatever it is and his bride of THREE MONTHS had a kid.
Guess they’re not real into that abstinence-before-marriage thing either…
