Out of curiosity, what is considered legacy at a school? only a parent who went there? Would, for example, an aunt be considred in this category, or is this a stretch?

It’s a stretch for universities but it might matter to prep schools. Call and ask.

Legacy is when you have a member/s of your family who have gone to that school. An aunt, uncle, sister, brother, mother, father and any other close family relation can be considered a legacy. Some students have up to 3 or 4 generations of grandparents/great grandparents who went to the top prep schools. Its nothing more then a small nudge towards acceptance. It does increase your likely hood of getting in but if you have no legacy it wont matter.

An aunt would definitely be considered legacy.

Legacy is defined differently by each. It’s best to ask a school directly. If you do have a relative who went there, it doesn’t hurt to let the school know. However, for some schools, legacy does not extend beyond having a parent as an alum or having a family history of close relatives attending that school.
